This is something that must NOT be left to the power of a Minister, as that was how so many useful railway lines were closed by Governments in the 60s!
Question: What do you do when legal judgements have twice gone against you?
Answer: Easy - you change the Law!
This is what Jeremy Hunt is doing. A clause is being tacked onto the Care Bill which will have its second reading in Parliament on Dec 16. It will make it easier downgrade or close hospitals with minimal public consultation. Doctors have called it the "Hospital Closure Clause."
Can you sign this petition? https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/hospital-closure-clause
Thank you.

Have done so, as we have had so many shenanigans over the Whittington A&E ....

Useful. but uneconomic. Would you be happy for your taxes to go up to subsidise the line from Ayr to Dalmellington ?
As a matter of fact, I probably would. The Beeching railway closures were an example of short-term gain causing huge problems when it became apparent that there was a need for the services to be re-introduced. It's much more difficult to re-open a line once it has been built on - similarly for a hospital.
People MUST sign the 38 Degrees petition. The Government is again sneaking in powers to downgrade or close hospitals if it decides that any in the area are "failing".Democracy is once again attacked ! Local GPs as the Clinical Commissioning Groups or local councillors and thru them you and me will have no say in what is happening to local hospitals
Have a read of the background notes on the Lewisham campaign to show how the local community can defend the NHS! Rod
People should sign this 38 Degree Petition . Its to stop Jeremy Hunt arbitrarily closing hospitals like he tried (and failed ) at Lewisham . Do you want St Anns, the Whittington or North Middlesex closed ?
Rod
Disgusting I've signed the petition.
Thanks for responses and for this link Bob:

Can the Coalition really be ignorant of the terminal damage they inflicting on the our healthcare with this indecent haste to dismantle the NHS? For which, of little importance to them, they have absolutely no mandate?

Typical of Hunt and this awful ConDem government. They have introduced changes to the NHS without any mandate and when there is any opposition they simply change the law so that they can get their way. (The picture is from a 50,000 strong demonstration against privatisation and attacks on the NHS at the Conservative Party Conference Sept 2013; maybe you didn't hear of it, thats because reporting of opposition to NHS changes is minimal.) I have signed.
