Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Gang of people foraging bins - right now in Harringay.
Right now in my street. There are 3 of them. I asked them to go away but they just came back.
Beware of leaving anything out. They are after anything that can be used to steal your identity.
My neighbour who speaks Romanian identified them as from her country,

Not sure it matters that they are Roma (if indeed they are)... this sort of thing is perpetrated by any number of ethnicities and is always to be warned against.

How did Romanian become Roma in this discussion? Not the same thing. Romanians come from Romania and Roma people found in many different countries, including Romania....Romanian is a nationality and Roma an ethnicity.
I don't like the foraging in bins by anyone thanks, irrespective of who they are or where they come from.

When I grew up in Harringay, the same sort of things were said about jews, blacks and gays..
It still seems to be acceptable to say it about Roma.

No worries. I am as concerned as anyone about people going through the bins but I'm also very wary of tying certain crimes to certain groups.

That's certainly true, but of those engaged in criminal activity, many are (at least as far as the documentary evidence suggests) effectively trapped in coercive gang structures - they're not here by choice, they're not keeping the profits of their 'endeavours' and they aren't living in any sort of comfort. And above all, and what is obscured by 'Roma=thieves' type generalisations, is that there are plenty of white British street criminals and plenty of law-abiding Roma. What is going on is maybe that Roma are *more likely* than average to be coerced into street crime; just as black Londoners are *more likely* than average to be victims or perpetrators of gun crime. Neither outcome is *because* they are Roma or black per se though; it's that ethnicity maps onto class, community structures, migration patterns, linguistic ties etc etc and makes certain things more likely to correlate. Ditto in the USA, where black men are way, way overrepresented in crime statistics, but also in poverty, failed eduction, mental health problems etc. Just seeing the tie between ethnicity and crime is an easy road to race-hate. Correlation is not causation, and that's where my wariness comes from.

William, I think you are on the verge of being a bit precious about this. A physical description is helpful, be it a white guy with cropped hair or an Asian woman with long dark hair. We all have a physical appearance. For myself I am the product of a Jewish Irish grandma and Irish gypsy grandpa and a Scottish grandma and an American mixed race grandad who gave birth to a Jewish gypsy Irish dad and a Scottish Unitarian Mum. Yeah that's all fine but Jewish, Irish or indeed Roma are not physical descriptions like hair colour, height, build etc are.

They drive me freakin mad, they move the rubbish from one bin (refuse) to the other bin (recycling) as they riffle through my rubbish, then veolia give me some crap about they won't collect the recycling bin 'cause it's got the wrong stuff in. Doesn't matter who the hell it is, it shouldn't be going on, I usually f and blind at them.
