Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Pop-up space to open on Green Lanes for December - Suggestions / requests welcome!

The KFH offices will be available for community use for the month of December

Ideas currently on the table include a pop-up market for a few days and a pop-up cafe. I mentioned it to a local who might be interested in hosting a pop-up cinema.

It's a blank slate. We could make it something very special. So, any ideas / offers / Requests?

Or maybe it could be Christmas carols - the community area could be a base at which to start a bit of carol-singing (with all the harmonies for those who want it)?

I like the idea of some kind of market, maybe an art/crafts market for locally made goods in time for Xmas: I used to be part of organising a fortnightly art market in Sydney many moons ago and it was very successful.

Also, I'm just going to float the idea of giving art history talks: would anyone be interested in coming?  I'll elaborate, if this floats anyone's boat.

I'd come to art history talks, Alison

I went and peered in the windows of the building today and then chatted with Rob a bit about what sort of things are possible. Its a great space, much bigger than I thought from outside, with a little kitchen area at the back, and it really is going to be just sitting there free and available for a many days in December for us to use if we can think of things to do with it, it would be a shame to let that go to waste. Theres just no funding so you have to have simple ideas or pay yourself, and for anything to happen we have to do it ourselves, no one is going to do it for us.

The jumble sale, market, art workshops etc all seem like fine ideas, if anyone started trying to organize any of those i'm sure others would also jump in to help.

What about a pop up art gallery/competition type thing where we locals supply the art and visitors pay to vote on the pieces they like with the top ones getting the money? Something like anyone can enter a photo or picture or drawing or whatever, I guess the theme would be Harringay. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, a photo of swans on the new river, or a drunken friend in the Salisbury, or your kids finger painting? And it gets exhibited there for a day and visitors can come along to see all the pieces and pay £1 to vote on their favorite and at the end of the day the proceeds get split between the top votes, or something like that?  We should be able to get at least a hundred or two visitors which would make the prize money worth peoples while entering, and perhaps have a few drinks and snacks there in the evening for the hour before the winners are chosen. As one date the 27th of Dec is free i think and seems like an ok date for something like that for those that are around here between Christmas and new year.

What does anyone think, would you enter something or come along to have a look and pay £1 to vote on a piece?

Both me and my husband would probably be inclined to enter something and we'd be pretty certain to come along and vote.

Re Ant's community groups 'marketplace' - great idea! - and How about tying it in with the Christmas lights evening so people could come and watch the turning on of the lights and then go into the KFH to find out more about what's happening locally?

Multi use is good. We are really lacking a work hub space in the area where the large number of freelancers can go. We need good WiFi, desks, child free. A place to work outside of our homes and coffee shops. Where exactly is this space?

This is the building, Julia. Initially it will be just for a month, though there are signs that it may be possible to get it for longer (for a three year period perhaps), but in that event it would need to pay for itself in one way or another.

Julia, if you are stuck for a place to work, there are 80 quiet study spaces at Wood Green library, fast Wi FI, comfortable and adjustable seating and plenty of cafes nearby.

Thanks so much for your reply. So here is the problem with a library - it is TOO quiet!! We need a space where we can take phone calls; we want to chat to other people working there as we do get quite isolated. Meeting other freelancers is really important as people in these communities start to pass work between them.  So you see, none of the cafes or libraries really meet our needs. That is why the Hub spaces in town, such as Hub Culture and Hub Kings Cross were set up.  We just need one around Crouch End as there are so many of us - all to be seen during the day working away uncomfortably in cafes or stuck at home because of all the drawbacks (kids noise etc).

I am sure local artists could join in a selling exhibition/ market  with arts & musical students  . Check out neighbouring boroughs  & Crouch End [ Barboot] & your own Chocolate Factory .The former Byam Shaw is now St Martins studios  at Archway  & are always ready to go. Also Mountview Theatre School is in the area ....

How about some Bring a Dish parties to raise money for further Community Activities.

Also there is organisation linked to the Dairy in Stroud Green , supermarkets & restaurants that puts on economic dining events in order to raise funds for the hungry . This I have always thought is a really good idea.

NB The chap that runs Chaps & Dames hairdressers [ Frederici] - English - who has vintage shop on upper Tollington Park, Stroud Green is a really good singer songwriter on the piano. Check out utube. He will Know many musicians in the area.
