Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We have some friends who live on Wightman Road Road near the Greek Church backing onto the New River. The last few nights and day there has been a group of kids throwing rocks at them and their neighbours' windows. The other night someone was almost hit on the head by a rock 20cm in diameter this also nearly hit a window where their 1 year old is sleeping

Has anyone else seen these kids? There was apparently around 3-4 of them about 12 to13 age (approx) with bikes.

If anyone sees or hears something similar can they please report them so that something can be done - or failing that if they are your kids can you please send them home to bed??

Grief, that sounds pretty dramatic. Sorry they're subject to this. I've never heard of this before. Certainly a police mater by the sound of it.

Not sure if previous post was successful.

How awful. My suggestion is to get your friends to take pictures of the boys as best they can.

Anything as evidence or that identifies would help the police.

Good luck!

I would have thought that there would be quite a bit of pedestrian traffic through there... dog walkers for one.

Not really, John.

I'll keep an eye out for them Sarah Rose.

I have lived close by the footpath for years and have never heard of anything like this before.  Assuming they weren't aiming at someone in particular, I would guess that this might be a mindless prank - maybe inspired by recent sporting events.  Your friends happen to be where the path is fairly close to buildings but, even there, it can't be much less than 70 feet from the path to any windows.  A cricketer wouldn't think that's very far but hitting a target at that range would need a bit of strength and skill.

If I see kids larking about by the river, my approach is to get close enough for them to see me and to know that they have been seen.  Sometimes I can speak to them over or through the fence.  Mostly they have been quite polite.  If they were intent on misbehaviour, kids usually get going once they think they been spotted.

Thanks all who've said they'd keep a look out. My friends are just worried as both their bedrooms are at the back so would hate a window to brake whilst their baby is asleep in there.

This is awful.  Hopefully they get caught or scared off.  I would also worry about the glass and I would put some sticky tape across the inside of the windows at risk so that if it does get smashed the tape should stop the splinters flying about.  I wish there were more things for teenagers to do during the holidays.  Boredom breeds stupidity.

There is plenty for them to do in the holidays. But they just want it handed to them on a plate instead of using their imagination.

Libraries, parks, cinemas, swimming pools, basketball courts ( floodlit even ) .

I think Liz has a list of activities for the holidays.

I think I can see a key reason this has started. I walked back home along the New River path for the first time since the path was reopened and I noticed that for some reason Thames Water have added a layer of rubble to the top of the path for the first 100 yards or so from the Hornsey Station end:

Plenty of handy missiles around:

It's not clear to me why Thames Water have done this since I don't remember the path being in a particularly bad state. It's a shame. It looks worse now and is less comfortable to walk on. I'd imagine that it's positively dangerous for any older people who are less steady on their feet. Perhaps you could prevail on one of our councillors to talk to Thames Water on your behalf and see if they might remove the source of ammunition?

More pictures here.

Hmm, seems Thames Water is providing ready made weapons here. I have to admit that as a kid (in 1968) I did things like this (and far worse). It's not a new phenomenum but it doesn't make it any less acceptable. And youth centres were so uncool I wouldn't have shown up for ping pong, probably because it was organised by the Vicar. What put me off was a shout and a threat to tell my Mam (and at one point being held at gun point by Farmer Lockie when I tried to ride his cow to school but you'll have to read my as yet unpublished book to find out the details)

When, prompted by Dick's Olympic allusion above, I suggested the other day that these may have been young shot putters on steroids, I was  clearly so far off the mark that I was moderated with extreme prejudice and disqualified from the event, stripped of my gold medal. Quite right. The 20 cm diameter missile mentioned was obviously of lenticular shape, hurled by a young discobolos on steroids. This would have been the 2kg regulation discus, more likely 18 - 18.2cms diam., and quite lethal. But Hugh's rubble above seems rather lacking in such weighty lenticula - unless, of course, they've all been hurled already.

Sorry to hear of the problems your friends are having Sarah Rose. Thanks Hugh for bringing it to my attention. I'll get in touch with Thames Water and the local safer neighbourhood police team.
