Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Harringay Online finalist in another award
About a month or so back I received an email informing me that Harringay Online had been nominated for an award for the Technology4Good Awards. This morning I heard that we've been shortlisted to the final three for the Community News Award.
I don't know the person who nominated us, but thank you PJ and thank you for the very nice things you said about Harringay Online.
Of course, it's always nice to win, but I'm, truly more touched by the nice things PJ said about us in the nomination. That's pretty much award enough for me. So, I've shared below an excerpt of PJ's nomination (And no, I did't write it!).
The award finals are in July, I think.

Tell us about who you are nominating
Harringay Online is a well-established community noticeboard plus community news plus discussion forum that is one of the best sites of its kind in the UK. It has thousands of members and supports lively and valuable debate across a range of topics of interest to local people.
Why do you think this organisation or project should win this Award?
There are many local community noticeboards and news sites but Harringay Online is one of the oldest, busiest and friendliest spaces that operates at a neighbourhood level. Now entering its 6th year it is a thriving hub for the community including adverts, swaps, campaigns and news. It is also home to a number of great new local history resources. It deserves to win because of all the hard work put in by a growing band of volunteers who are using the web to help connect people at street level. It has played a significant role in sharing news and information within the neighbourhood, such as the steady flow of updates and messages of concern during the riots in London in summer 2011. This is a mature community space, where the sharing of news is a core ingredient in building a sense of community and fostering positive change for people who live in the area.
What is the impact of this organisation or project on the community?
Harringay Online has been home to all sorts of community activity since being set up five years ago. It has been a hub for local campaigns, a way for new residents to get to know the area, a space for raising concerns about community safety and a focus for building local history resources. Many different people have benefited from its work and it currently has over 4,500 members. The site stimulates positive connections between residents, both in terms of encounters and exchange.
What will be the next steps for this individual or organisation?
The forum continues to grow and change as more people use it. A recent addition of a history timeline provides an interactive space for adding to local history. Although many members are also making increasing use of Facebook the Harringay Online website provides a different type of contact and shows how community news is operating at a variety of informal and formal levels. Some news is timely, such as activity on forums during the riots in summer 2012. Other information is about community events and activities, which are being more widely, more easily and more cheaply promoted than before. The next steps for the site must be more of the same success.

Great news ilovefreegle.org won this tech award in 2010 congrats on being shortlisted it's a prestigious award and good luck in the finals! Freegle which means 'Free Giving Locally Easily' is part of the not for profit recycling/reuse organisation ilovefreegle.org and is a free online forum where members can give or get just about anything so long as its free and legal. Freegle has only one goal 'To Stop Good Stuff Going to Landfill' and in doing so support our local communities. There are currently over 345 groups and more than 1.35 million members saving hundreds of tons of perfectly useful items from landfill - It's free to register and free to use. We also actively encourage Schools, Community Groups, Scouts, Hostels and many more to post for resources free of charge.
