Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I saw the advert in the Journal today  about the new website from Graingers on the Seven Sisters regeneration plans. Look here.

Eeeeuuuw!

They have even had the chutzpah to put some Boris buses in for scale. So these horrors are three or four times taller than a double decker bus. They will throw a very long shadow.

Surprised they didn't take the extra step to superimpose some trendy Dalston people in too...

You should see their shiny leaflet. It has beach umbrellas.

Ah yes, here! Sitting beside the A10, sipping cocktails... Idyllic.

I just read this bit on their website

..[we] intend to set up a display around the kiosks and stair enclosure to the Underground Station for public viewing. This we refer to as the Memory Box.

The memory boxes are two slim screens facing both towards the station entrance steps and into the public square. They will incorporate the distinctive window frames, with decorative quadrant mouldings, salvaged from the former Wards Department store. This responds to the original 2004 Planning Brief with its encouragement to 'reflect, and retain, the architectural features of the store, if at all possible'. The surrounds will frame permanent display panels containing a history of the area illustrated with drawings and period photographs.

This really, really makes me sick. I want to go out and hurt somebody. How dare they?

It's like reflecting and retaining the architecture of St Paul's cathedral by knocking it down and sticking the head of one of the statues on a pole!

Where is Prince Charles when you need him?

Well said...

Yeah, so did I. The website ask people to register their support, so people can only register if they support the plan. What about the people who don't support the plan?

How contemptous of Grainger to tell us who live in Tottenham that the demolition of our local heritage asset will show the "outside" that regeneration  has started in Tottenham. By destroying livelihoods and small local independant businnesses in  buildings that are part of our character and that we in Tottenahm want to keep and see restored. It as if THEY see US as part of the problem!!

These are buildings that have been occupied THROUGHOUT the hard times that this area has gone through over the years, DESPITE the neglect over many years of those to whom the Wards Corner building belongs and the INEFFICIENCY AND INEFFECTIVENES OF THE COUNCIL WHICH ULTIMATELY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PUBLIC REALM AND ENFORCING THE CONSERVATION AREA RULES.  What have they been doing all these years  while Hackney and Lambeth and Southwark have been restoration swathes of neglected areas?

They show total CONTEMPT for people of Tottenham. And we have not heard the last of this yet,There is an undercurrent of disenchantement and ANGER that is welling up on this side of the borough because people feel that they are not being listened too despite the many 'pseudo consultations', many organised in haste only becasue of the riots. See "Regeneration of the area may not benefit us" (the Tottenham Journal 26.04.12) and other reorts in the local media.

Grainger is presenting studies from outsider specialists THAT THEY COMMISSION to back up their case, and so are NOT NEUTRAL but in favour of this very large, for profit plc, which has not done the necessary work to REALLY KNOW what the people want. What is important for them is adequate return on investment. What is important for us is true improvement in the quality the lives of those who live in the area, improvement that will then attract more people into the area.

All this with the complicity of the Council - go and ask direct questions to your councillor and see whether they answer and what  they say. GO AND DO IT I SAY!

The message being sent out is we in Tottenham don't desserve restoration-led interesting buildings that will allow the local "regenration" to happen organically and so benefit the communnity by building on its own very strong sense of place and community. Bring the generic building that could be found ANYWHERE on this globe. In a few years any possibililty of our area having a UNIQUE SELLING POINT - yes lets talk business and marketing- will literally have been demolished by these short sighted, misinformed people, who don't have a clue about what real development is about!

Take the time to visit the WCC site, read the whole story from the community's viewpoint and see the initiative started on a community-led project that the council has willingly ignored and sidelined, even threatening collaborators to cut them off from council work when they wanted to work on the project.

THIS MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN
