As the weather forecast is more rain for London tomorrow, can I suggest people report any localised pooling or flooding. There's a page on flooding on the Council's website. With another page specifically about drains. There's also advice about who to contact when the floodwater seems to be mixed with sewage.

A frequent reason for pooling is when surface drains are so full of gunge that water can't drain away or does so very slowly. Even a moderate rainfall can show-up the problem, so it's an opportunity to notify the Council - or Transport for London on main "red routes"- before we get heavy rain and storms. If you're taking a photo, a stick can be handy to mark the spot, while avoiding possibly contaminated water.

With heavy continuous rain there are times when there is too much water for the drainage system to carry away.  At which point water will flood from drain gullies into nearby streets. Again, it's useful to report this.

I have also been trying to report this flood/leak this week. I was originally told by Thames Water that this is a private road belonging to the council and they have told the council to fix it.

I was very surprised to find that this is a private road does anyone else know anything about this?

I thought this sounded a little strange so the following day contacting Haringey Council and a lovely lady called Pat did some investigations, sent out a couple of men to have and then called me back.  The land that the leak is on is owned by First Capital Connect and Pat reported the leak to them for me.  I have a telephone and a reference number so thought I would give it a few days and then get back on the phone if the leak is not fixed. Sadly a Bank Holiday weekend is never good for such repairs.

Unfortunately, if they do not repair the leak our only recourse appears to be trying to get Thames Water to enforce the repair. This could take some time.  I wonder if anyone else knows of another way to enforce speedy repairs on unused land or where those responsible do not take their responsibilities seriously. It seems such a shame to waste all this water.

Sorry I have not got back to you sooner. Hoping that todays rain has not caused this flooding again.

The details I was given are First Capital Direct Ref 3089030 Telephone number 0845 6769904 and I spoke to Pat Derek at Haringey.

Hopefully problem resolved

Hmm

Just wondered if you could see the where the flood was coming from ie drain or main?

I am not up to speed on these things but surely if it is a drain as suggested by John D below would this not by default be Thames Water and they are just passing the buck so they don't have to do anything.  Does anyone know or know how we can find out?

I went up there yesterday for another look, and the road was dry. This means either that the leak has been fixed or else that there was no leak at all, but instead a blocked rainwater drain which gave the appearance of a mains leak. Because there had been a short-lived period without rain, that may be the explanation.

On another point, I was alerted on Saturday to a broken drain cover by the pedestrian crossing at the south-east corner of the junction of Wightman Road and Turnpike Lane. Because it posed a danger to pedestrians and cyclists, I have reported it to the out of hours service who have assigned it the reference number of 653869. If anyone sees that it hasn't yet been dealt with, I'd be grateful if they would report it themselves and/or let me know. David.Schmitz@haringey.gov.uk

Since the flooding happens every time there is heavy rain and stops after a few dry days I don't think it's a mains leak but a blocked rainwater drain between the bridge and the Wightman Road junction.
