Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Smoking a shisha waterpipe for one hour involves inhaling 100 times the smoke inhaled from a single cigarette, warns Haringey's Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Nilgun Canver, citing a message from the World Health Organisation, following council enforcement visits to shisha bars which uncovered over 60 kgms of contraband shisha tobacco.

In February council enforcement officers teamed up with Revenue and Customs and the police to tackle the legal issues surrounding shisha bars in the borough.

At one shisha bar in the Hornsey area they found an illegally enclosed smoking shelter which exposed staff and customers to secondary smoke. They also found that the shisha tobacco on offer to customers bore no health warnings, as is required by law. A search of the premises revealed over 56Kg of contraband shisha tobacco with a duty value of over £4,750. This was confiscated by HMRC as the required Tobacco Excise Duty had not been paid.

During another visit on the same evening to a retail stockist in Hornsey,   6Kg of  contraband shisha tobacco, valued at over £509, was seized by HMRC.  Again in this shop the tobacco on offer did not bear the required statutory health warnings.

Councillor Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:

"The World Health Organisation says the use of shisha water pipes can be as dangerous if not more dangerous that smoking cigarettes. It is therefore vitally important that these premises, and the tobacco used in them, are subject to the same strict controls as cafes and pubs.

"Many young people use these pipes, often with fruit flavoured tobacco, and are completely unaware that they are inhaling something which is a risk to their health. That's why it's important that health warnings are displayed clearly. It's imperative that people know what they are inhaling”.

Happy Week end.

Im a shisha smoker - i smoke at home and i have smoken at most shisha bars in north london. Unfortunately  there are no whole sale businesses that are currently selling Duty paid Tabbaco. It would be hard to practice lawful business if the places they are buying Tabbaco have not paid Duty.

Please if there is a known place that sells Duty paid Shisha tabbaco to forward me the details. Because i am 100% sure most shisha bars would like to know and practice properly without any problems. I have only seen 1 shisha bar that is practising the sale of tabbaco properly, They have put stickers and warning in there smoking area. Each shisha bottle has smoking warnings which i totally agree in.

I believe that if either the council or HMRC can disclose companies that sell Duty paid tabbaco im sure all businesses will follow and purchase from the correct place. If the HMRC are going to start raiding or confiscating tabbaco it should start from the wholesale.

Look forward to hearing your views.

Regards

Can i have your views or if anyone can share information which can be shared with businesses would be great.

Regards

Here we go... they came for the smokers, now the shisha pipes and the drinkers are already in their sights... I know that all these habits can be dangerous and smoke does affect others, not only the smoker. I am a non smoker myself and like to live healthily.

But cant we have some activities that are not over-controlled by the state and have some choice? Young people are mentioned here- are they being badgered about the health risks every time they eat burgers and chips?

Pretty soon there will be no choice about what we do socially.

Sex is pretty much out too

Too dangerous...

Exactly.. cast people out.. I dislike your nanny state very much, which is no different in many ways to a communist run state.

You know Berlin Ruth and you know that we have bars/pubs for smokers, as well as for non-smokers - the law states that those under 18 are not allowed to enter 'smoking' bars.. until they are 18 and old enough to decide for themselves what they want to do and how to live their lives....

Great Stephen. Yes, I was impressed by the possibility of choice in Berlin and in other European countries where smoking law is not so dictatorial as here. In Vienna the smokers sections in restaurants, cafes etc are generous in size and well used.

I avoided using the term nanny state as Mrs Thatcher came up with that I believe and she is far from my favourite person. But consenting adults, surely, should be allowed to make up their own minds about smoking shisha and fags or anything in the company of others, away from others who don't want to be affected. Choice can work- it does where you live! The hypocrisy of our Beloved Leaders here makes me feel like puking... And shisha smoking is a cultural thing. The shisha bars here were horrified when they were, at the last minute like clubs, suddenly included in the smoking ban. It is crippling businesses and in Leicester, where the council is coming down very hard on them, there is a low level war going on. I fear now this will happen in Haringey.

Councillor Nilgun Canver is talking utter crap but she is merely spouting the same old tripe out that the WHO wish people to obey. I say obey because this is all about control-nothing else. The WHO finally acknowledged that they cannot control the world's drug abuse problems, so turned to tobacco-the easy target. Sadly, with 75% of the population not being smokers it has been easy for them to induce a "smoker hatred"-and this is sweeping the land.

SHS has never killed anyone, and it never will but the WHO have used so much junk science as to baffle all but the most astute among us. Smoker hatred is now rife, this is wrong for smoking is a freedom of choice-and that's all it is! It was only a matter of time before 'they' came for the shisha bars and the rubbish (junk science) they have created is unbelievable-except that ASH et al keep banging out the same old lies in the belief that if you tell a lie often enough it will become truth!

Paul Hooper, the so called 'expert' who produced a damaging report on shisha/hookah smoking for the Dept of health is/was merely a pen pusher for ASH Warwickshire. Scientific knowledge? NIL!

More updates soon folks.

I imagine 90% ( a guess ) of the population do not abuse drugs, so would it not have been even easier for them to induce a " druggie hatred "?

All part of the need in Britain for a snobby 'them and us' society..

It comes up all the time here on HoL .. whether on schools, eduacation, housing, areas, politics, where you shop, jobs, foreigners..the old class system at work in new ways..

You don't seem to be able to feel good about yourselves or run your society so long as you are not 'better' than others..

Currently it's the smokers who are getting the bad deal..

Once again gotta agree with you. Class cuts through just about everything in this society, still.

Smoking of course was a habit that was not restricted to one class but more likely to be a working class thing, the 40 Woodbines a day etc.

The attacks on shisha pipes is an interesting one as it often has the ethnic element.

Hard to provoke such  'druggie hatred' moral panic John as drug use is so far ranging from glamourous super models like Kate Moss to crack using kids on estates. Some drugs linked to the high flyers such as bankers (and we hate them already don't we!)

Going to get my hit of coffee now. My drug of choice... At least that is still halal and not haram...

Why can't the police clean up and close down all these so-called social workingmen's clubs from the Langham to Wood Green to Coventry?  Is it the backhanders, or are they just asleep on the job?
