Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A mention of poppy seeds on this post about sunflowers plus the first nasturtium seeds starting to appear in the garden made me wonder if we could organise a Harringay seed swap at some point.

Seed exchanges usually take place about February time, I think, but if there were a few people who were interested we could all start saving seeds now for it.

We could make a night of it and maybe have a beer and do some seed swapping at the same time (I know, I know any excuse to go to the pub).

Let me know what you think and also ideas for the sorts of things that it might be good to save/swap. As a novice, I'm new to the whole seed gathering/storing thing so any pointers would be useful. I'm happy to 'organise' i.e. post a time and date for a meet up if there's enough interest.

this sounds great. i would be very happy to swap some seeds, i should have hollyhocks, marigolds, sweet pea, nigella, poppy, sunflower and maybe a few others...
i may also have some cuttings but not sure how to take those into the pub...!
Last time I went to the pub I came home with bags of seedlings! I think bringing cuttings would be okay as long as you can get them there.
Poppy seeds and a pint sounds a good enough excuse for me too. I'll have an assortment of seeds for flowers and some veg  as well. (Recycled envelopes make very good seed packets.)

I would love some poppies for our little garden. I'm not sure if I have any seeds but I do have some basil seedlings and have just planted some thyme and dill.

We need some colour in the garden because I think squirrels have dug up a lot of our bulbs.

Ooooh I'd love to be involved as well. I'll start collecting. I should have sweet Williams, chives, and by the end of the summer different veg such as chard.
Yes, great idea. It would be particularly good to get some seeds for the various planters that different people are looking after.

In terms of collecting seed, I'm no expert but it is important to try and collect it when it's dry (and the seeds are ripe). I just saved some foxglove seeds by shaking the whole flower head over a sheet of newspaper and then storing them in an envelope.

Seeds I could bring along - foxgloves, poppies, astrantia, nasturtiums, violets...
Hi I would love to join in too, its a great idea. I can definitely bring nasturtium, calendula, nigella, sweet peas and probably other stuff too though I'm a bit of a beginner on seed saving/cuttings front. Thanks for posting the idea
Okay, now I know I've got a bit of interest I've pencilled into my diary to post a seed swap/beer event in February. I'll let this thread know when I do that. Start saving!
Talking it over with Alison, she suggests that we might want to consider an early autumn date for a flower seed swap maybe in September. We could do it twice: autumn for flowers; spring for veg and cuttings. What do people think?
Sounds perfect to me.
I think Alisons right, though maybe we do any seeds in Autumn (as some veg is good to start off germinating in doors in February) and then other seeds, cuttings and seedlings (excess plants grown from seed) in Spring. Either way I'm up for it.
