Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The fallout from the phone hacking scandal is moving at lightning speed. Resignations are piling up at Downing Street's door.  Both the commissioner and AC have gone in the last 24 hrs and Brooks at NI on Friday. Tomorrow we have the select committee hearing and Wednesday Cameron cuts short his trip to Africa to attend another debate surrounding associations and fallout from this hacking scandal.

The heat appears not to have been taken out of this scandal by the above mentioned resignations. In deed it appears that pressure is increasing on Cameron to justify his associations with Coulson and his 26 meetings held over the last 18 months with NI executives.

Borris has just explained at a news conference this afternoon that the Met Commissioner and his AC have had to go because of distractions getting in the way of doing their job  (such as questions surrounding their associations with the ex- deputy NOTW editor, later hired as a PR man by the Met and other circumstances).

Is Cameron's association with Coulson and News International beginning to hamper his efforts to get on with the job of running the country? Will he end up resigning as PM?

If so, could we see Nick Clegg as the next Prime Minister?

Or even the possibility of a snap election in the autumn?!

Right now events breaking daily on the news seem almost stranger than fiction.

Why would they want to kill this discussion? ... 's been top of the content list for what seems an eternity..

Is there editing of the "Latest Activity" section going on? Eg your post Stephenbln that I'm replying to here has already gone from the Latest Activity section. Posts earlier today on "Grainger Plan for Wards Corner" seemed to be disappearing from the Latest Activity section swiftly too.
And that post also disappeared from the Latest Activity section after 10 minutes so the answer looks like yes. So Hugh, is there any way to choose or find the uncensored Latest Activity?
Thanks for your comments, Ant. Worth a look at our terms of service, house rules 2c - link at the bottom of the page.
This discussion not been removed from latest activity, but as with any post on HOL the number of spots it has on the LA panel may mean that some entries are trimmed. It currently has two. If you want to ensure that you're kept informed of all replies to a particular discussion, all discussions can be followed by using the link at the foot of each page. It was not trimmed from the LA panel earlier in the day.

Mysteriously disappeared from the 'Recent Top Content' list Stephen (when you could have breathed a sigh of relief) but after my comment it magically reappeared. All's well that ends well Stephen. No need for an inquiry :)

You must be lapping up the multiple UK scandals (over there in Berlin Stephen). Still, Merkel does have her hands full herself right now doesn't she. The Euro; live or die?

Of course it will live.. to think otherwise is stupid wishful thinking.

IMO, The Euro business is a 'set up job' by the financial markets to hide deficit problems in the U.S.A. and I have to say in the U.K. too. How much debt public and private is there in the U.K.? The Greek problem didn't suddenly happen yesterday - It's been hanging around like that for years - begging the question - why now?

Maybe because the markets need to make some money and taxpayers in Europe are seen as an easy target - not the U.K. of course - you don't have any to spare.. Just keep the attention off the USA which has seriously overspent for years on wars it couldn't afford. That's why they are pulling out of Afghanistan - not because 'the job' as they call it, is done, but because they don't have the money to pay for it anymore.

The Euro is still stronger against the GBP than it was when first introduced.. And is the world's second currency. Talking it down does nobody any good. That's why I don't understand the BBC's continued campaign against the Euro. (Or do you believe everything the BBC tells you?)

Everyone always talks about Greece & Portugal - nobody talks about Austria, Finland, Netherlands, Germany, France, Estonia - all doing exceeding well within the Euro..and it has to be said - better than the U.K. Every coin has two sides..

The crux of the matter is - Germany is n°1 in Europe but is still very wary of taking the lead, because everyone will then say 'oh, the n#zis are back' ***. Britain despises not being top-dog anymore and still tries it's bully-boy tactics in Europe, but is not taken seriously by most of the other countries. They just let it's sidelined politicians rant on.

Germany must take the lead in this situation, but whether it will - I wonder..

***that might have changed a bit now that NI has been brought to account

Whilst the appeal of a conspiracy theory is well understood, Matt. I'm sad to report there is none here. There was no dastardly doctoring of the Top Content Feature. In fact we joke from time to time about the independent life of that very facet of HoL. Perhaps a prize to the person who has the algorithm for how it works?

Ok "trimmed" not removed. How is it decided which posts are trimmed, is that a manual operation by the admins?

Is there any way now to get see all the posts to everything without having to manually follow individual discussions?

No Ant, sorry; as has been the case since quite early on, there isn't way to get to see all the posts in through the latest activity panel. The reason we edit the content of the LA panel is because most users don't visit regularly enough to be able to use it to keep up with what's posted. So we try and help by using it to give an overall idea of what's active. Without that people don't get the opportunity to view the whole range of active conversations. We may also take into account that this is a local site and give preference to locally focussed posts.

As far as I'm aware most other forum software doesn't have a latest activity feature at all. I guess they're built on the basis that people keep up with the bits they're really interested in? So, I think Ning's LA feature is an advance which offers a much better insight than most forums do. But, for my money, it's doing it's best work if it represents the broad spread of activity rather than acting as a ticker tape. Of course if there was an overwhelming sense from users that they want a ticker tape we'd look again at how we use it.

Hope that helps clarify where we're coming from on this.

I see. Ok for my 2c a "ticker tape" type of behaviour would by much more useful. Now that LA has changed to not show any text of the replies and its censored to not show all the replies it doesn't have much value IMHO.

I don't know whats possible with the site software but if you could show the date/time of the last reply along with the number of replies which is already shown in the "Latest Post in the Forum" section which is now at the top to the front page then that would be about as useful and the LA might as well be removed from the front page.

Could you add an unedited LA section somewhere other than the front page so less obvious and less likely to cause upset?

Oops. Thanks for pointing out that the short text had disappeared from LA! Now fixed. I'm glad you like this relatively recent amendment to the LA feature.

Preference for a ticker-tape noted. Thanks.

An hour ago David Lammy elicited from Cameron that he'd never seen the Redhead in her pyjamas. Not sure whether that means I should vote for Lammy next time. I'd much prefer to be voting for Dennis Skinner who managed to get a much more revealing non-answer from Cameron re his variously informal intercourse with News International re BSkyB.
