It's not only on Wightman. I would think the workers have the option whether to wear masks or not.

Has Veolia checked Wightman Road?   Osborne, why not ask them? Here's the link posted on HoL by Mr Fabrice Bouchon, Veolia's Regional Manager. 

Has Haringey checked?  Again, you can ask for information on possible pollution; where they've measured and any advice given. Here's the link on the Council website.

In both cases, can I also suggest you post the replies here.

There have been previous discussions on the quality of air in Harringay, see Liz's post " Check the pollution levels in your local area" which gives a link to the London Air Quality Network. (Sorry I don't know how to provide a link to it).

"The London Air Quality Network website contains information about air quality in and around Greater London. Measurements are collected either hourly or twice daily from continuous monitoring sites, processed and checked then placed on this website with an hourly update."

The monitoring stations for the borough of Haringey are positioned at Priory Park (measuring Ozone, Nitrogen Dioxide and PM10 particulates) and Haringey Town Hall (Nitrogen Dioxide, PM10 and 2.5 particulate). One of the Islington monitoring stations is at Arsenal (PM 10 particulate). Some also measure Sulpher Dioxide and CO                                 Pink = Nitrogen Dioxide, black = PM10 particulate, and green=PM2.5 particulate.

Where is Haringey Town Hall ?

 Wherever it is, NO2 and PM10 seem to be comfortably within the objectives, which is nice for us :)

I think you're talking about the London Air Quality Network site. Easiest thing, Maggie, is just to access it via our Information Resources page. There's also a link to all discussions tagged pollution on our Tag listing page.

I suspect that the general pollution from cars and vehicular traffic plays no part in the masks thing at all- the discussion about PM10 below is interesting but unless you have a Nuclear, Chemical & Biological style face mask and filter they will not stop you breathing in PM10 (Particulate Matter of around 10 micro meters)- the face masks are not finely enough graded to stop such small particles.

I suspect the most simple answer is there is a shed load of dust raised when sweeping, especially with conditions being so dry and there being no dust to wash the smaller particles of dirt that can be aerosolised when sweeping. They are just stick of filling their lungs with dust.

  I'd like to get a Veolia face mask -where do they get them from -I have to endure the Green Lanes air every time Itake a bus -if it's bad in Wightman it must be lethal in Green Lanes
