Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Although not in Harringay Its somewhere people may use! I was in Downhills park yesterday with my 2 year old, sitting on the grass around midday. I had just used my phone when I was pushed by someone from behind, then my phone was stolen by a kid (around 14-17) in a hoodie who then took off on his bike! I often use the park and have always felt very safe there, but wanted to make people aware that this is happening!

Presumably you have reported this to the police?
Sorry to hear about this. Thanks for letting us all know.
Hi Harriet,

I'm from one of the local papers, the Haringey Independent. Sorry to hear this happened to you. Did you report this to the police, and would you like to talk about this further, so other park users can be on alert?

Kind regards,
Elizabeth
Harriet, fyi Elizabeth is a journalist for the Journal. Obviously, it's up to you whether you contact her, but worth thinking through the pros & cons before you do. The local papers often use HoL to source stories (and sometimes even credit us in the newspaper!).
FYI Elizabeth (and of course you're prob already aware) there seems to be a fair amount of this teen crime going on around the Downhills/ Chestnut Parks area and surrounding roads. Incidences of a woman being pushed off her bike whilst cycling in order to steal said bike, attempted 'car jacking', etc. Been going on for months.
Hi Matt,

I have heard a few things about this, but no one wants to come forward. If I have details of incidents being reported to the police, I can chase it up.

Thanks,
Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth,

I reported it to the police, if that's any help.
Harriet
Yes it is, everyone should report these types of incidents as the police use crime mapping statistics to target their resources - see http://maps.police.uk/view/?q=n15&url= for an overview of incidents in the area.
You poor thing! I was there at the playground with my 2-year old about 24hrs before and had been thinking what a quiet, picturesque park it is, plus there were several non-scary dogs being walked which you rarely see these days.
I long for poodles.
My wife had her phone stolen a while back. Some real learning points came out of it:
1. Call the mobile provider immidiately, and they can put a block on calls so your credit is not sucked up. They can have a new sim to you in days!
2. You can often get softwear to back up your phone to your PC so you do not lose all your contacts- this is often the biggest hassle, losing your contacts
3. There is a special code on all phones, I forget what it is called, I can check, something like a PIM code. Anyway. If you know this and can tell your provider they can effectively block the use of that phone on any network so it is of no utility to a thief... We did have it, so hopefully the git who has bought it down the pub has got a donkey!
It is called an IMEI number and you can usually find it inside the phone under the battery or on the box the phone came in
