Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey Council's impressive library service offers us 21st century librarianship with a new e-book service.

eBooks and Audio Books can be downloaded and borrowed for free.

Users can:
  • access nearly 500 fiction and non-fiction titles;
  • use the new digital library service for free. All you need to use this service is your Haringey library card and pin number;
  • download to your PC or Mac, or you can transfer titles to your iPod, MP3, Sony Reader or other portable device; and
  • borrow up to 10 items for one, two or three weeks.
Titles are automatically "returned" so there are no fines to pay.

Users will need to download titles on to their own device as this service is intended for home use only.

Not bad, eh.

I've just tested this out.

I needed to download 2 bits of software - 1 for audiobooks and 1 for e-books.

Limited titles at this stage

Otherwise works well and is incredibly convenient.

Well done Haringey.
This is all well and good but one wonders whether this kind of e-development might come at the cost of branch libraries. The council wanted to divest itself of the branch library network in the late 1990s (and have just two "super" libraries). Were those plans binned or just shelved? It's not too hard to see e-books being offered as a substitute for local libraries, rather than as complimentary which it should be.
Clive, you are right to be vigilant about possible cuts to library services. Under the coalition, they are alomost certainly going to be seen as 'soft targets' for council cuts but I would think/hope that this development might encourage people who are not regular users of the library to use the service and increase membership.

I've sent this link to my husband who does not borrow books from the library but who would be interested in borrowing e-books/audio.
I think you're right Liz. Because of the hours I work I'm gone before they open and often back after they shut so it could be a way of getting more users through the virtual doors.
You may not have spotted, Michael that the following Haringey libraries are open on Sundays from 12 noon - 4pm.
● Wood Green Central Library
● Hornsey Library
● Alexandra Park Library
● Marcus Garvey Library (Tottenham Green)

Use this link for more about all our libraries.

Just to confirm Clive's point that many years ago - I think it was during the massive cuts of 1990 - there was indeed some talk about shutting most of the libraries. (Although I'm unsure of his figures.) However, I know of no such current savage proposals - even whispered.

Though obviously, the current cuts by the Coalition Government ─ including in-year ─ make those times seem relatively benign.
Thanks Alan - no excuses then for not visiting!
