Estate Agents' boards advertising school fetes
I've no doubt school fetes are worthy activities, but do people really need to let estate agents get free advertising by allowing them to set up their hideous boards on their property in return for advertising school fetes. There was even one attached to the rails at the end of a section of Harringay Passageway. Do people find them pretty?

If boards are a bit rubbish that's down to the school not being organised to get their design out on time, hmm hmm. Most agents will get attractive boards sorted out like NHP's board this year
or South Harringay Infants a couple of years back
So maybe all we schools PSA members need to make sure we get well designed boards out - this was discussed in our PSA meeting in South Harringay - but I'm afraid we have no other means of raising that kind of cash so easily to do all those things outlined above. I'm not sure any state school in Haringey,east or west, has the kind of parents who write out cheques for a £1000 at the drop of a hat...
btw The board that Stuart refers to tied to the railings was out of order. There is no way that a school should allow that to happen and shame on Martyn Gerrard EA for allowing it. I think you should complain to the EA concerned about the fact a board was tied to public railings.

My personal view is that I don't like needless boards going up! Anything that helps a school raise money is obviously a good thing, but I feel there must be better ways of achieving this, rather than having to have a board up outside a property.
I would rather sponsor books for example. I actually have several incentive ideas for local schools, non of which involve having a board erected! And yes, boards do advertise up and coming school events nicely (if well designed) but so do blogs and social media, so the board could be replaced with a window poster perhaps.

Lots of our parents don't use social media so we still have to rely on more trad methods but South Harringay might be interested in hearing your ideas, Steve. Must pop in for that cup of tea as I keep threatening to do.

Oh John, do you really imagine that we don't do that? In fact, I spent 4 hours last week crafting, printing and getting distributed a PSA newsletter to all parents delivered by teachers into the waiting hands of parents.
What we are talking about here is fundraising not communication. The boards are less about letting people know about the fete and more about being a substantial funding stream. Steve is suggesting there may be other ways we can work with estate agents to do this. I'm interested in his ideas as I know he has worked with community projects before.

Since, as Matt says, the boards go up a couple of weeks before the event, but then stay up for a further four weeks afterwards, it's not really about publicising the school event, but simply renting out advertising space to the estate agents.

Careful Birdy, your argument could be used to justify a lot of things done for money in a good cause (feeding hungry babies for instance) that you might not feel so comfortable about. Just take the criticism like a man if you like the money.
