Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A friend recently introduced me to the existence of the Merlin bird app (see: https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/). This can be downloaded to a smart phone and used free to identify birds from their song.  In my short experience, using it has been a delight. Sitting in the garden with the app switched on quickly identifies the bird sounds it picks up. In a couple of brief sessions, I have heard at least a dozen species (eg wren, robin, dunnock, black-cap, blackbird, great tit, collar dove, wood pigeon, magpie, carrion crow, parakeet etc etc). I have not yet explored all the app's features but I see that it is possible also to upload a photograph for identification.

I did, mischievously, send this picture of a ceramic sculpture. After some hesitation, the app identified it as a tawny owl. Quite a compliment to the artist who made it!

Thank you, Dick. I've tried other apps with little success. I'm looking forward to trying this one out.

I have the RSPB Guide to Birdsong, with a CD, which is educational and enjoyable.

The Merlin app is excellent! I've had it a little while and it's such a great way to identify all the birds you're hearing. Highly recommend giving it a go.

Sounds like a good app,  though I will be loathe to leave behind my Chirp-o-matic app simply because of the name!!

I've been using it for a while, Dick, and agree it's excellent!

Whereabouts (roughly) do you live, Dick? I ask because Collared Dove is a rarity in Harringay so far as I am aware (by way of illustration, I have only had three records of the species in Finsbury Park in over 12 years of birding there...)

My Wightman Road garden is by the New River.  This photo was taken on 9th June.  One or other of the pair have often perched on our bird feeder even though they can't reach the food except by pecking around for the bits dropped by smaller birds.

Agree Merlin fantastic - was recommended recently, and so much better than others I've tried!
