Cycling on the pavement
Since when did it become acceptable to ride a bike on the pavement- over the age of 10?
Everyday now I see someone cycling up or down my road, Pemberton. Different adults, I mean. I’ve also seen cyclists on the pavement on Wightman, but the most ridiculous sight was when I saw a man, on his bike, weaving his way through a throng of pedestrians on Wood Green High St!
The imperious ring of their tinny bell if someone has the temerity be walking down the road, in their path.
Grr 😡

Not sure which bit of Wood Green High Street you are referring to, but some parts are shared space. Not ideal for both I know, but just for reference

I've been meaning to raise this issue for some time having had many a close shaves with cyclists on pavements. Have been mildly bumped into as well. Usually on the crowded ones of Grand Parade, where there are many pedestrians, people gathering at bus stops, tables and chairs outside cafes etc. There isn't much free space on the pavements at the best of times and you have to weave in and around. But when you have adults, some with big bikes and shopping, or take out food on their backs, going along as it they have the right of way, it's downright dangerous. I've had bells tinkled behind me, meaning I suppose 'get out of my way'.
Where are pedestrians supposed to go? Where is our space if not the pavements?

The devil is in the detail. What’s a pavement? Does this include (currently) shared use paths eg through parks (where there is however currently no signage to indicate whether cyclists can use them or not). And annoyance? This sounds like licence for anything that anyone dislikes to be deemed unacceptable. Of course weaving your way through shoppers on Wood Green High Street is nuts but the proposed restriction seems to go far wider than this. Cycling is hazardous enough in Haringey as it is without applying a chilling effect like this.

well said! As a cyclist, you very often have pedestrians on your path as well (I'm talking a separate path like they have eg in Walthamstow where cycle lane and footpath are segregated through a white line and it's clearly signed). Also, signage in Haringey is really bad - eg on Monument Way they got a 2 'shared path' and a 'cycling forbidden' sign right next to each other. Ridiculous!

Btw: cycling for any age group is forbidden in England. Not saying cycling for adults on pavements is ok, just saying that it doesn't always make sense but we still gotta know it.

When I go back to my hometown of Sunderland I'm always surprised how many people (of all ages) will only cycle on the pavement.
I think it dates back to the time of men cycling home from mines and shipyards after a long tiring shift. The impression is that it's as if the roads are collectively viewed as too dangerous for cyclists (though I don't think they are more dangerous than anywhere else.)

My Da used to cycle from his allotment in Southwick the length of Washington Road with a box of veg balanced on an old pram base he towed behind. He was always firmly in the centre of the lane!

I could not agree more. As a cyclist myself it infuriates/saddens me to see cyclists on the pavement. I always ask people to get onto the road and usually get an earful. The police don't seem to see it as something they need to do anything about (when I have asked about it). I wonder if people should start taking it up in Neighbourhood Watch groups? There is a problem in Haringey where often, there is shared pavement around road junctions. I think this just causes confusion. How can we tackle this? What with cyclists and scooters I now walk as close to the wall as possible if I walk anywhere to avoid being mown down. I think a few on the spot fines might deter people?
