The beautiful Silver Wattle (Acacia dealbata) in Pemberton Road by the Harringay Passage is in blossom and it is wonderful.

What I would have called a mimosa. Trudy likes this yellow beauty so much that I bought and planted a couple of saplings last year. Sadly, they appear to have succumbed to the unusually cold winter. Your picture encourages me to believe that there must be a variety that can stand a hard frost.

It's frequently labelled a mimosa in gardening catalogues and websites and the delicate yellow flowers when used in floristry are usually called mimosa. I think the perfume created from it is also called mimosa probably because this has a better sound then Silver Wattle. It's a member of the acacia family though. The true mimosa is the Persian Silk Tree (as in it is in the mimosa family) which can sometimes by seen in parks and gardens as an ornamental.
The Silver Wattle is a tree of temperate climes and not resistant to prolonged frosts although it can tolerate temps of -5 if it has to. It offers welcome shade to parents waiting for their children to finish school
I remember planting that tree in a Pemberton work day on the planters. A Pemberton resident, Mark, had grown the sapling and we planted it out a good few years ago. It has thrived possibly because it is protected a bit by the buildings but still gets a lot of sun. Maybe. He must feel very content seeing it so happy.
Anyway, it smells divine and the bees love it. Recommend people taking a stroll to admire it before the blossom goes and taking a big nostril-full of its heavenly scent.
