Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all, I'd like to turn a window into a door by removing the brickwork underneath the window and fitting a door. I already have a door in mind from a supplier, so the job would be to open the aperture, install the door, and fix any outstanding plaster issues on the outside. I don't know what kind of tradesperson would do this job usually - maybe just a general builder? Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who has done a job like this in the past?

Thanks for any pointers!

It's not quite as simple as you describe. You would need to remove the window frame, support the brickwork above the aperture, remove the brickwork below the aperture, fit a door-frame strong enough to support the brickwork above, and then fit the door. Personally, I'd advise getting a builder that's willing to take on a relatively small job. Small, but not necessarily inexpensive. Good luck.

Thanks. What do you mean when you say support the brickwork above? There is a lintel above the window, does it need to be supported further than that?

Christopher is right in what says. Give Mark Hudson a try 07957268699. He is very experienced and covers all aspects of building work. Highly recommended

Thank you - I'll give him a ring!

A word of caution - I believe that this is subject to Building Regulations and will require Building Control to sign it off. A relatively straight forward process, but necessary for your house insurance and if you ever want to sell.

Yep, we are getting this signed off.
