Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Answer: 100m below Furnival Street

Tea Bar Alley is one street built as part of an underground network in WWII. It's located under the Prudential Insurance building on High Holborn. The tunnels were designed as a air-raid shelter for up to 8,000 people, and as a possible last-ditch base for the government in the event of an invasion.

Passed from MI6 to the Post Office and then to British Telecom, who tried to sell the network for £5m in 2008, the network was a joint venture between the Home Office and London Transport.

Interesting post Matt. Thanks for sharing it.

I have it on very good authority that there are many old tunnels and rooms, some of which are used for emergency training. Emergency staff are instructed to carry out certain tasks and instructions, and timed in the process. Sounds a bit 'secret squirrel' but, it makes complete sense so as not to alarm folk, or cause disruption to the network.

I too would love to have a good look around.
Hi Steve

Tours of various sites beneath London seem to be one off in-the-know situations. Otherwise people, like members posting on 28dayslater, gain entry themselves without getting permission, then post photos of their exploits on a website. Check the River Fleet (wait for images to load and play through - it's worth it). Eg;

Would you be able to find out if BT ever sold the area under the Pru?
Cheers Matt

Some great pictures there. Definitely worth a look!
