Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

There was an interesting discussion on sg.org a little while back about HoL. I picked up on the start of it then forgot to go back to it.

They make some interesting points. sg.org is more sociable. Should we try and encourage more of that? Should Liz and I stand back more? Anything else we can learn from what they've said?

It may be more sociable but is it more effective at getting things done? I would be interested to hear of any success stories that SG have had.

People like different things, I find the shear amount of topics started on here too many. Maybe a thing for the agenda in conjunction with our previous conversations at the next group meeting?

Is SG a one man band or is there a group that helps out like the HOLG? As I have said before a group that talks about major issues and votes on them is preferable.
re. Anything else we can learn from what they've said?
Err.... don't know! Do we get a link to the discussion? (Do we need to subscribe?)
Thanks Alistair. I'm being a dozy awd bugger. Link added above.
Hugh, one of the points made by one of the stroudgreen contributors concerned the quantity of threads begun by you and Liz. I find most of these interesting and real conversation starters. But is it worth considering the suggestion that the HOL moderaters post in their own blog ? [a suggestion that on occasion has also been made to non-moderators ;-) ]

If the main page normally shows a significant proportion of moderater-begun posts, it can give the impression that this is being done to drive activity or turnover, at the expense of reflection. Non-moderator posts are soon swept away.

One stroudgreen.org poster suggested HoL was a barrage of noise, which was unfair but I can see that on occasion, someone might think that. One person's lively discussion is another person's noise. I don't think lack of "sociability" is accurate for HoL, but would a slower pace be to advantage?

The rapid turnover may put off or crowd out some of the 95% + of members (?) who only lurk. Now the site has been running for nearly three years, is it possible to publish any usage statistics?
Regarding the comment made about it being better to keep the forum anonymous by not having photos - I think it's good to have a choice. Horses for courses 'n' all that - I like the way HOL members can choose whether to have a photo of themselves, something else, or no photo at all. Looking at the members of HOL you can see that people just do what they wish and what they personally feel comfortable with
I've said this to you before Hugh, but I hope you're not still posting stuff on behalf of other people who are quite capable of posting it themselves.

This bit made me laugh:

its packed with informed local residents

They missed an apostrophe. They'd get mugged on here for that.
Glad to hear we've got literate moderators, John! (Gosh does that mean you got as annoyed at Gordon Brown's inability to distinguish between 'less' and 'fewer' as I did?) Anyway regarding the difference between Stroud Green and Harringay - I actually live in Stroud Green but I find HoL much more informative. I'm interested in campaigning and influencing the Council. I'll have more of a look this weekend and do a bit of a comparison.
We've decided to be relaxed about that one I think. See here.
Ay!, Ay! HOL Site admin would never pick anyone up on their spelling and grammar but beware the Local Pedants Society, they can call a meeting around your post anytime to discuss the finer points of English grammar. Feel free to ignore them :)
I do think that threads can disappear very quickly - and then they are difficult to find. But that seems to be a function of the platform? It could be improved by making it easier to scroll down through threads that have appeared over the past few days at least.

However, this site is much livelier (as in there are far more recent posts) compared to the SG one.
I would agree with David J - if the threads were accessible for a few days (as in the forum section) it would be easier - unless I have actually responded to one I find it difficult to find them a few days later!
Thanks for all the great feedback.

I agree that the forum layout isn't ideal, but whilst we're with Ning, there's little we can do. However, a couple of tips. You can access a number listings of the forum discussions at any time, including:

1. Discussions by category here. You can then click on a category and see all discussion in that category, for example all discussions in the Local Elections category. Then, just above the listed discussions, about three quarters of the way across the page, you'll see a drop-down box which gives you further option of ordering the discussion by Latest Activity, Newest Discussions or Most Popular.

2. All Discussions - by using that drop down box again and selecting discussions. You'll then get a send drop-down box and again you'll have a further option of ordering all discussions by Latest Activity, Newest Discussions or Most Popular.

So it's al there - a little complicated perhaps, but I'm afraid it's what there is.

Keep the feedback coming.
