Come on, we must be able to chuck a load of pictures of Harringay in there people, if all you have to do is add some photos to a Flickr group!
This is just a trawl for masses of free material, as any image submitted - not just the prize winners - is being donated to LBH for them to use any old whichway, and they will 'try' to credit you. Lookit:

"By submitting a photo for inclusion in the My Haringey Photo Competition you give us permission to use the photo without any cost, fee, liability or charge to Haringey Council on the Haringey website and in other publicity materials and work. If we do use the image we will endeavor to credit you as the photographer, respecting any terms which you may specify under a Creative Commons licence (external link). For more details see the full terms and conditions below." [my italics]

Then there are lots of paragraphs indemnifying them of any risk.

I've written to the given address to check that this is really what they are up to. It sucks.
Oh, well that's a little naughty. It's ok if it's clear, but I completely missed it. Thanks for pointing that out Pamish.
Blimey, well spotted. Is that normal for a photography competition? My crap snaps are creative commons anyway but does seem a bit underhand Let us know what they say.
It's as common as whenever they can get away with it. More moral competitions only keep winning material, but this LBH type is becoming common.

I'll look up some NUJ repro fees so people can see what they are signing away.

Here: RATES: Stock pictures - for EACH use
Magazines category: C-D: trade and cheap specialist mags - this is an absolute minimum as they are between this and the next rate up:
Cover GBP 250.00
Double-page spread GBP 235.00
Full page GBP 180.00
1/2 page GBP 100.00
1/4 page GBP 70.00
1/8 page GBP 60.00

PR work is AT LEAST double this - eg their series of ads about My Haringey.

These rates have barely changed in the past decade.
For the competition the submitted image must be less than 5 MB however they stipulate among other things that 'you hereby grant Haringey Council non exclusive worldwide, royalty-free, irrevocable licence to download any high resolution version of your photograph(s) for the purpose of display and archive'.
So its possible that you don't win but the photo is appropriate for some other council publication in the future and then Haringey Council has the right to contact you and has the licence to get a high resolution version of the photo off you and then doesn't even need to credit you and all for free. What a cheek.
The winners have been announced, and the two top prizes went to images taken in Harringay.

Thanks for the update. Go Harringay!
The winner wouldn't happen to be our very own Snappy Stephen by any chance?
