Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The students who live in the house next door to me spent two days constructing a 20ft Mongolian yurt (tent) in their garden and now spend most evenings chanting and drumming (I kid you not) around a well-stoked wood burner.  This is clearly not just a temporary thing either, they've run electricity out to it, and even planted flowers in pots at the entrance!

I'd like to think I'm pretty easy going and "hippy-tolerant", but it does strike me as a bit of an imposition on one's neighbours, particularly as we we don't even have a real fence between our garden and theirs.  They're actually quite nice young people, considerably better than some of previous years' students, but it's only March and the thought of having a Cherokee style encampment all through the summer fills me with some trepidation to say the least.

Any thoughts/comments anyone.......?

they sound like amenable kind of people so why not compromise and ask them to stop drumming/chanting after 10pm which is quite late enough, although i have to say I really empathise with you
I have been used to the solitude of my garden only to be broken last year with a young couple moving next door where upon they are always outside and the parents seem to make even more noise than the toddler does ALL DAY, just playing with her- hate it, but cant do anything and my little fence makes no difference
Im sure me and my cats dont disturb them anything like they do with their little angel but dont think noise control would have much to say about it unfortunately
Karen, I feel your pain! Have similar problem. No Alison, it's not you!
Hi Antoinette,
I think I've heard the drumming and thought it was coming from some event in Finsbury Park! My husband owned a djembe , but he didn't like to play it as even indoors the sound really carried, especially the bass notes.
Love Maddy
I think I'd prefer the drumming at the bottom of the garden than if it was in the house next to me.
Hi Antoinette, I'd try the noise team first of all. They need to come out a few times, but if the noise persists you are effectively building a case against them through the noise team. You should also get on to the landlord, talk to them and explain, they might consider eviction if it does not improve. As a final straw you could try taking legal advice.
Keep a noise diary - it really helps, and will give your complaints more weight when you speak to the landlord.

Surely just is bothering more people than just you though. Can your other neighbours pipe up and complain too? That way it will carry more weight and you will feel less like the mad old lady and a bit more like a sane person just wanting some peace and quiet and normal behaviour from your neighbours.

Good luck. It's awful that a few inconsiderate individuals are allowed to carry on like that.
Take the stupid yurt to the park and chant there!
I saw it from Railway Fields! Wondered what on earth it was.

Breach of planning? Or maybe something could accidentally cut the power supply in the night. Not that that would stop the drumming and chanting.

We've got a few drums - maybe I can send Malc round and the boys can do some early morning drumming in the garden.
