Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This evening, we have been visited twice by someone who was offering to help recover money that customers had been overcharged for energy during the pandemic.  Not sure exactly what sort of scam this might be, but it is impossible to see how it is legitimate.  We didn't let them in or provide any details, just told them to go away.  We would recommend other people do the same.

Was it someone from a company called Money Expert by any chance Andrew?  I was doorstepped by two people from this company around 5 on Friday afternoon (I’m on Warham) and they said they were there to give me advice about saving money on energy costs.  When I asked them what they were trying to sell it all got a bit unpleasant and I ended up closing the door in their faces.

That sounds like the same - it was my wife who answered the door and also closed it in their face.  She said their badge said MEX - which could be Money Experts.  It was just one man in our case rather than two.

We reported it to the police.

I’ve done a bit of searching about Money Expert.  They call (either on the phone or in person) and say they are giving impartial advice on a service that is better value for money. Last year there were a lot of complaints when they gave advice on switching broadband provider and it turned out they were actually being paid by BT to do the calling and receiving commission if they got a customer signed up switch to BT.  Hardly sounds impartial!

We've been here before: in the very early stages of first lockdown (including doorstepping us), and back in 2017. Same 'Money Expert' name, so very close to the name of the well-regarded 'Moneysavingexpert' website.

Thank you Michael for coming up with the Money Expert name, it had eluded me.

This, from Money Expert or other operators, may well be more prevalent over the next year or so. Energy prices, gas especially, are forecast to increase well beyond inflation. One of the two France-England electricity transfer cables is currently out of action, to add fuel to the fire: coal-fired power stations have been restarted, increasing generating costs.
