Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Super exciting news for those Austro-Hungarian food fans among us and to be honest who doesn't like a bit of goulasch. According to Hot Dinners a Hungarian restaurant and deli (deli opeing in March and restaurant a bit later) is coming to Turnpike Lane. I have checked out the address given on Turul's Insta etc and it is what is currently called The London Cafe/Gonul - ie right next to the tube station. There is already a poster about the new incumbent in the back window. In the kitchen is Balazs Berta, previously at the Goring Dining Room no less. I'm very excited.

Turul Project are opening a Hungarian deli and restaurant in Turnpi...

Thanks for flagging this up.

Their website shows that, rather than Turnpike Lane, they're going to be based on Green Lanes in the currently empty premises in the art deco building, at 1 Turnpike Parade, above the tube station.

But that's not empty anymore - it's now a canary yellow vintage clothing store. My google also gave me that location initially for that address. But it's at the back of the London Cafe where the Turul Project poster is in the window. Odd.

But either way - exciting!

If you’ve eaten at Gonul the loos are up on the first floor maybe deli downstairs and restaurant upstairs.  Wherever it going to be I can’t wait!

So, it's at the other end of that same building on Green Lanes?

Thanks for the correction.

Yes I saw that poster yesterday. Sounds exciting!

Exciting. We ate so well when we visited Budapest look forward to this on our doorstep

Foie Gras....yummy.
May raise some eyebrows though!

OooooH - I have such fond memories of eating myself stupid in Budapest - can wait to indulge with a nice bottle of Tokaj!!!!!

Ah, what a shame. I absolutely loved the old Gonul cafe and used to go every Saturday morning with my daughter for one of the best cooked breakfasts in the area. It got to the point that just by walking in, the chef would smile, begin our usual order and it would be ready for us almost as we sat down at the table. I really liked the makeover they finally finished after lockdown, even though we loved the old movie theme also. I'm not saying the new theme and food won't be good, I'm just a little sad that after what must have been a serious expense to revamp the cafe that the lockdown appears to have killed another wonderful local business. It is with regret, then, that I wish them well. We'll be first through the door when it opens.

The Turul Project opened last week, just next to Turnpike Lane tube on the site on the old Gonul Cafe. They are open as a Hungarian deli and coffee shop until restaurants are allowed to open.

I've visited a couple of times to buy amazing wild board salami and really good coffee. Certainly something different for the area. I really hope they are successful, and can't wait to visit the restaurant!

Good news - I will pop down
