Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

A few years ago, our garden was infested with foxes. For two or three years, every spring brought new cubs - fox poo everywhere, flower beds dug up, scavenged fast food containers and chicken bones dumped on our lawn. Then, one late summer after the latest batch of cubs had left home, we tidied up the undergrowth at the bottom of the garden and had a general clear up. That winter - and all winters since - the foxes didn't come back. Saw one wandering in the middle of my road at dusk yesterday, for the first time in ages. Are there fewer foxes in Haringey lately?

Agree, haven't noticed fewer either. I cycled back home quite late just before Xmas and saw four on the way, all around the Harringay station area. All very healthy looking. Two were having a scrap in the middle of the road and were totally unbothered by me stopping to watch. Amazing. Glad not in my back garden though, what a noise.
I saw a young dead one, victim of a road accident, in Wightman Rd. earlier this week.
Hazel:
it is good that some people let their gardens grow into a 'wild' or 'woodland' garden. It is exactly because of this that wildlife is attracted and can live. there are too many pristine sterile gardens that discourage wildlife.
Did you say they were mating on RUTland ?
Folk here pretend that they make no noise when rutting. Do you really make no sound when having sex ?
I saw one near the railway line during the snow then another a couple of nights ago walking along the pavement in Stanhope Gardens so they are around.
Just surprised my old fox friend in my back garden...think he likes to get in the brambly, overgrown bit (on purpose to encourage wildlife) and have a snooze I think. I know they can be a pain but its still a wonder one of them takes the air on your table
When the lake in Finsbury Park was frozen I saw a fairly scruffy little fox trot over onto the island in the middle! I wanted to ask someone if he'd be able to get back once the ice melted or if he was risking being marooned.. there weren't many people about though as it was kind of early in the morning (I'd been waiting at Manor House for a tube for almost an hour and still wasn't even at the front of the crowded platform so decided to go for a walk instead). Can foxes swim?
Can foxes swim?
Yes :-)

I don't know if it's a rural (as opposed to urban ) myth but there are stories of flea-ridden foxes swimmming with a bunch of twigs or grass in their mouths. The fox submerges and the fleas take to the life-raft which the fox then abandons.
Ah that's a relief then! I was afeared the poor critter would fade away on the island. I mean, there are boats there but they're upside down, and he didn't look strong to me.
You were thinking the fox wouldn't be strong enough to row back ? :-)
Well actually I thought he wouldn't be strong enough to turn a boat over :-) but yes, he probably would have struggled with the rowing as well. Lacking the skill, as well as the strength, I imagine... he and I seem to have something in common! Sigh..
Foxes can not only swim but are also pretty good on the springboard.
Not in our area, they are continually wandering round the streets. Used to be they were from Omega Works, perhaps still there - although that complex is now more busy.
