Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just drove through. And seems they have spent even more on Concrete & Steel Barriers

Thought they was Short of Funds ?

Noticed outside Opera has gone and area Now used for Covid-19 Testing

Please to see people using the test center

Still Charging £3.00 for Lake side Car Park

Wonder if charge covers their costs ?

Barriers to stop groups gathering in the evening and avoid road closure, which costs the palace a lot more. Opera was always only temporary and was in a different place to the testing centre. Parking charge is to help support the palace while they can't host major events and seems reasonable to me.

Aware Why barriers have been put in

But sure they are rented and are costing a fortune

But worth look how many have been put in

It would have been cheaper to put in a Traffic order and have Wardens ticketing offenders

Testing Center is Top end of Car Park, where opera was, access available both ends

Aware reason for Car Park charges. But believe costs must be more than any return

But ticketing means that the problem has occurred, and ticketed cars are still there, blocking the road.  Isn’t it better to have measures in place to stop the problem in the first place?

I am sure if motorist started to get £100.00 Fines. It would stop it. Instead of turning a Major Borough Park in to a Steel and concrete fortress . Which must be cost a Fortune to Hire. Especially as they claim they are short of Funds

Not forgetting they claim Haringey Parks / Greens are supposed to be People places

Not forgetting that the Bottom parking spaces was put in by the borough. To stop commuters parking in residential street

As Haringey collected over £800m in parking fines last year it doesn’t seems much a deterrent

Michael, I wondered about that enormous number ["Haringey collected over £800m in parking fines"] when reading your post a month ago.

But today I read that Haringey collected, between Aug '19 and July '20, £9.9 million in parking fines, fractionally behind Newham.  Fuller report here [Guardian]. It's still a lot, though!

Waa!  It should read “over £800k per month last year”.  Apologies

Ah well, even Homer nods...  :-)

At £800m a year I would expect a chauffeur per resident!

Also the parking charge is a donation. You are asked to pay it but don’t have to.

I have seen many refuse and not allowed in. Would rather have a trust box than people just standing at entrance.

But still expect that it is not cost Effective. Taking into account Extra barriers in use

Re Parking fines income. Not forgetting that it is a contracted Out Service. Thought figure quoted was a fraction of £800 Million

Also aware many do not pay or vehicles are not registered

The Only real deterrent is towing them away. Then for owners to produce documents to get them back

The sum is from Haringey’s own annual accounts  Who gets the money is beside the point, the level of fines is an indication of of the level of parking infringement.

Local councils also have powers to clamp cars and get them towed away if a driver doesn't have car tax or insurance, it is causing a hazard or has been abandoned, not for a simple park infringement  (the law changed some time ago)
