Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

My husband was accosted by a horrible woman offering her services on the corner of Ducketts Common and Frobisher this morning. I was walking along behind him and she was obviously asking any man walking past. Black hair, brownish complexion and the short skirt you'd expect. Saw her doing same outside Jam in the Jar earlier in the week mod morning.

Michael, I think the case of the Azerbaijani lady is different. In Maggie's example it was the criminal who was deported. You're talking about the wife of the alleged criminal. I think we both know the couple are probably dodgy but the following points are likely to be relevant to the case:

- a spouse should not be held to account for his/her husbands crimes (I'm sure you see what sort of precedent that would set)

- the lady doesn't seem to have committed any crime in the UK which would warrant her deportation

- I can imagine HMG is reluctant to extradite someone to Azerbaijan which doesn't have the best reputation in terms of law and justice. And while it's possible the lady's husband did embezzle money, it is also possible that the extradition request is politically motivated. Politics in the Caucasus as you probably know is quite complicated and it would be difficult for HMG to assure itself that the allegations meet our standards before agreeing to the extradition. Yes, the Home Office, Met and Security Services could spend time and effort to investigate but they'd probably rather spend the money on things that are higher priorities for the British people (especially at the moment).

She was the recipient of the proceeds of crime yet actually given a visa by the U.K. government because she had lots of lots of money.  Can that ever be right?

But is that not only an allegation possibly from political opponents in Azerbaijan? I wouldn't be relying on Azerbaijani justice. It's no wonder she is here.

Now if she's been found guilty of a crime in a more reliable criminal justice system like those of Germany, France, Scandinavia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc it might be a different story and I'm sure HMG would take a very different view.

Neil writes "She grew up in Tottenham".  Dear me, once again. He first made that pointless misleading local association a year ago, and now, Trump/Johnson-like, he's repeating it.

Her parents owned a shop in Tottenham, but they and she did not live there.

"Don't feed the troll", I know, but falsehoods deserve a rebuttal.

On top, his comment has negligible relevance to the original post.

The Patel parents, like many other Patels, had numerous newsagents' shops in different boroughs. Did Priti grow up above all these shops. If so, she outdid her hero Thatcher many times over. Maybe Neil could start a campaign for deep blue plaques to be placed on the first floor of all the Patel outlets, to make sure we don't ignore any of the many Priti nurseries. The Tottenham-Grantham-Gotham-Witham Trust could administer all the plaque awards, to do justice to all places of her imagination and influence.

Indeed John. So far we only know that black hair, brownish complexion and short skirt may add up to 'horrible' in Stav's lexicon. Funny, I have only the fondest of memories of the mini-skirt era.

The things she was saying to my husband and then to me were of a sexual nature expressed in a disgusting and crude way and in front of my young nieces. She did it deliberately to make us uncomfortable.

That's why she is horrible. Not, as I suspect you're trying to imply, because she had brown skin which is the same complexion as my husband's I might add.

I'm not interested in playing your games.

No games, Stav. Just seeking a bit of convincing context for your description, 'horrible'. Now that you've provided it, I think we can understand and empathise. Your suspicion of my motive was quite wide of the mark, as was mine of yours.

In a mixed-race community it is extraordinary that anyone should be a grammar nazi.  Different cultures have different interpretations of English language words.  Please open your mind and do not expect everyone to be the same as yourself or to use your good English.

Geraldine, have they rescinded Godwin's Law around here?

Why do you walk behind your husband? There have been hookers and  brothels in Harringay certainly since I first lived here in the mid to late 90’s, this is nothing new. Not sure what we are supposed to be aware of? Surely your husband (or anyone else) can just say no if he’s not interested? Michael also makes some very good points.

The approach taken in Sweden has been to make buying sex the crime with a zero tolerance approach to those who pay for sex - seems to recognise that buying sex is exploiting vulnerable men and women and sadly often children and is often supporting organised crime.
