Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This happened near to my daughter's flat - she heard the victim's screams - a 20 year old girl coming back from a night out - at 7 a.m this morning. Police have ticker-taped the area.

This is shocking news. I hope the girl is as well as possible. I also heard that statistically many rapes happen between the hours of 6 - 8 am and it's worth people knowing that.
The following came through via email from Harringay SNT;

Police offer the following personal safety advice leading up to Xmas:

Consider carrying a personal attack alarm, these can be obtained from most DIY stores. Harringey Safer Neighbourhoods team has a limited supply of personal alarms. Please contact the team on 020 8721 2677.

Keep your mind on your surroundings – remember if you are wearing a personal stereo or talking on your mobile phone you will not hear trouble approaching.

If you think you are being followed, trust your instincts and take action. As confidently as you can, cross the road or change direction, turning to look to see who is behind you. If you are still being followed, keep moving. Make for a busy area and tell people what is happening.

If you are concerned call the police on 999

Try to keep both hands free and don’t walk with your hands in your pockets.

Beware of anyone who warns you of the danger of walking alone or tries to engage you in conversation as an excuse to accompany you.

If you are going out and returning home late at night or in the early morning consider booking a cab to take you safely door to door and get the driver to wait until you are through your front door

I have said this many times now. Unpalatable tho it may b to hear th guy dragged the girl from the street into a front garden. There are several witnesses both sound , screams and sight where girl rescued from.
Just to confirm she was found 2 doors down from me ,we are half way between the river and the top of the road, quite along way from the passage really.
Matt, thanks for that advice. Though it may seem logical it's well worth being said again.

Part of my job deals with physical movement and body language. Your advice to keep hands out of pockets is spot on. In addition: make sure you push your shoulders back and SWING YOUR ARMS/ARM confidently.

Get alarms from the number Matt has provided and if you suspect you're being followed then make sure you let them off. Remember, if you suspect you are being followed then it's almost certain you ARE being followed.

I live in a house with 3 young females who all work horrible hours and am really concerned, but damned if this one lunatic is going to scare them. We've all spoken at length and they know exactly what to do.

I'm very keen on getting together with a few here to print out advice leaflets for houses in the immediate area if necessary -not just for females, but also to householders to be aware that if you hear an alarm late at night/ early morning do not assume it's just a car alarm: investigate it. It may be something much worse.
Are there any more details on this? there seems to be a lot of conflicting messages on here. It is all very scary especially with the dark mornings and evenings.
Thank you
This is as much as the police have released at this stage Rebecka. Was there any element in particular which you're keen to get clarified?
Rebecka

No further details at this stage. I was at a meeting with police Thursday last week but they were unable to release further details except to say all patrols across the borough have been briefed including undercover operations. Everything else for now is being withheld so as not to compromise the ongoing investigation. They cannot at this stage say whether the two incidents are linked or not.
No description yet?
No.
Surely we need to have a description from the police asap? Or perhaps the witness sightings of him running away last week were not enough for police to give one?
We've moved the sub-discussion about the safety of the passage to its own thread so this this one can focus on the community discussing the best way to respond to the incident.
