I suspect, Hugh, that is a question only you can answer! However, zipcar and streetcar are potentially attractive if you don't need to use a car every day - unfortunately neither has cars particularly near us at the moment though streetcar is getting closer. Worth thinking about other possibilities though - rather than experience the driving hell of Sainsburys etc. for a weekly shop, walk to our local fruit/veg places for the fresh stuff and/or get a Tesco.com/Ocado etc. to deliver the heavy stuff?
My understanding is that Streetcar have one of their cars based somewhere near Sainsburys. If enough people in this area showed an interest in being part of a car club, any of the operators would willingly place some cars here. The main barrier is parking spaces - they would either need a driveway or for Haringey to dedicate some of the spaces within the CPZ for the car club vehicle. Other boroughs do this (Camden) but as far as i know Haringey have not done this up till now. If enough people are interested I am happy to pursue this with Streetcar/Zipcar etc and Haringey Council. Let me know

The other option, which is what we currently do is car-share. We own half of a car with another family who live on the parallel road and as we are both light car users it works well. Contact me if you would like to know more about how the arrangement works.
Now that private car sharing arrangement sounds like a great idea. More like having your own car, with some of the benefits of a Streercar type arrangement. Like it.
here is a link to a well established car sharing club in leicester:

Apparently there's one share car in Wood Green. Haringey needs more. There are lots in Islington but they're not eco-cars - still have to pay congestion and parking charges.
the closest one to us is located very close to sainsburys, see map:

Hi there,

Just to say I actually joined streetcar the other day but have not used it yet. The nearest car to me is in Alexander palace and always seems to be booked at the weekend (at least so far), would be great if someone has a parking space (we dont have one)and gets a car somewhere on the ladder. I would do it if I had a parking space. Do people realise they get free membership and a few hours a month free if they allow a street car to use their parking bay. Most people on the ladder probably dont have parking bays but maybe the avenue or somewhere like that might.

p.s I dont work for them, i just like the idea.
Cheers, Dom
Hi all,

I've recently moved to the area from Kilburn. Delighted to say that we've been car free for the last 5 years. Bikes and public transport most of the time and Streetcar when all else fails. I'm still a member and have walked to Finsbury Park to use one there recently (others were booked).

It really is an excellent concept and extremely cheap. If people are interested, click on this link http://streetcar.co.uk/get_streetcar.aspx (and do me a real favour) by requesting one on the ladder. Most councils seem happy to dedicate one or two bays to car clubs.

Best, Paul
