Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Local Parties dismiss voters' sense of place

Those of you who've been reading the posts on the site for a while will know that I hold strong views about our sense of place in Harringay..........well in any place really. Our sense of history's part of that, our sense of community is a part and our name is part.

Back in April 2008, Nilgun Canver offered the following:

We've discussed and we have agreed to call the area Harringay Green Lanes and Too much emphasis on Harringay confuses everyone with the borough Haringey and I’m afraid it refers to the Harringay ward and excludes the Gardens and other target areas.

Today Justin Hinchcliffe, Chair of the Tottenham Tories joined in on Twitter with a tweet apparently ridiculing a voter's wish to have her place of residence recognised as Harringay:


What is it with our politicians. Don't they get it. Many of us simply don't wish to have our area chopped up and repackaged to suit their notions of political entities or boundaries. We have the right to choose - not you.

Are there any other representatives from the local blues and reds who'd care to share their views on this issue? And what of the local Liberals. We've heard nothing from you on this. We'd welcome hearing what you think.

Let me leave the last word to Thomas Burke, writing in 1921:

But do you think the inhabitants of those villas will rank themselves with those of Tottenham or Hornsey? Not likely. They are of Harringay. The guide-book was right: it is a suburb with a distinct individuality of its own.
Proud of its lineage, proud of its appearance in thirteenth-century records, it declines to surrender its identity to those who claim lordship over it. Before Tottenham and Hornsey were, Harringay was so often mentioned in ancient documents as to receive the honour of being spelt in six different ways - sure proof of importance. Indeed, the name Hornsey came into currency only through a corruption of Haringhea and Haringey; and it is therefore fit that the stout fellows of Harringay should defend the style and identity of their venerable village from the encroachments of that modern upstart Hornsey.

If you're talking about me Tom then, I was incensed by the political control freakery Tim was trying to use to get this discussion shut down. He perceived that Justin and the Tory brand were in trouble and tried to "fix" it by telling us to shut up and get on with our weekends. Patronising and yes I would say that to his face.

If you're a politician and you're not brave....

He works for one of the Royal Colleges, although his degree is in Spanish. And, I think, he's an atheist.

"Very good, points Tom. Thanks. Sadly, from Day One, I have found this site to be partisan and anti-Tory."

I would say the vast majority of this site are non Tory supporting folk, that comes with the area traditionally and as much as I'm not anti Tory, I would never, ever support them in any shape or form for the damage they did to this country during the eighties and nineties.

But, Justin, as you said to me, you are surprised and gratified by the number of members who have supported you on this discussion. I'm not sure if this site's membership has a "vast majority" that's non-Tory as Steve says, but whatever the relative size of the Conservative / non-Conservative voting membership, what's apparent is that we're a broad enough church to embrace contributions from all sides.

Strange, I remember that when the economy was booming around 2001/02/03 that the tories were going around saying that it was all due to their (earlier) policies and was actually their success.. Therefore it must follow that it was their tory 'deruglation' policies that got us into this mess in the first place....

Labour hasn't existed since around 1996 - it's been mock tory since then - that's the problem with the country..

The Tories of 2009 (the wets of the 1980s) are going around pretending 1979 - 1997 never happened.. and the country is sleep walking into a disaster..

I sense that this part of the thread is going off the theme of the topic into general politics.

Please be patient, gentlemen, there will be an opportunity for people of all political persuasions to express views and comments as we near the election.

Please give us time to come up with a format and a policy that will enable us to do this without swamping the site (and the admins).

So after all that political point scoring, did anyone hear the message that we don't want to be called F'ing Harringay Green Lanes?

Much like Milton Keynes is not called Milton M1 Keynes.

Do any of the political parties have this as a manifesto pledge?
