Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey council banned circuses with animal acts in 1983. It appears that the council have agreed to trail domestic animal acts for a trial period, following an approach from an animal circus.

Animal campaigns want the council to revert to a full ban. Read more here

Assuming that the animals are well cared for, whether it is cruel or not depends on the act, doesn't it? Dogs seem to love learning skills and performing tricks.
According to this article in HJ, the ban is now lifted and there will be performing horses and birds in Finsbury Park soon.
If animals working in a circus is wrong, should we ban guide dogs for the blind ?

For your information animals do not 'work' they are animals.
Old song James -

" The horse, the horse, it is a noble beast.
He works and works and works and works.
And doesn't mind the least "
Maybe we should start sending small children up chimneys again too?
On a serious note, i've spent a considerable chunk of my life with equines.
Horses and ponies need proper grazing and paddock space in which to be sociable and stretch their legs [they are highly sociable animals] Don't think these poor animals will get either in a traveling circus repeating the same old tricks night after night. The whole idea of performing animals in a Circus is sooooo 19th century.
I detest the notion that animals should be used to entertain. My brother worked in a wildlife park once where they took on "retired" circus animals and some were badly traumatised - repeatedly swaying, pacing in circles and so on.
Ban! It's a horrible idea! Whilst a lot of animals enjoy, and need, the mental stimulation of learning, a travelling circus with less than ideal living space as well as privacy (they're animals, not people!), as well as exercise and grazing - it's an idea that's completely and utterly STUPID. There is no way this kind of environment can provide what these animals need.
It's p'ing me off beyond belief that people think animals do not need proper care, exercise and privacy on their own terms. They're not people, they do not think like humans, and a circus cannot provide the life they need and deserve. Would you put small children in a travelling circus for people to look at? No? Well, they can't speak up for themselves either...
