Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

well there are lots of smallish potholes going down green lanes hill from Manor House to under the bridge. But last night my bike landed in a massive crater near Finsbury tavern. I’m not quite sure how I managed to stay upright, but someone thankfully, as my old brittle bones are a bit fragile these days. But more to the point, it’s badly buckled my wheel.  Really p....d off as it’s costing at least £55 to replace, not to mention the inconvenience

Be careful, as I think it’s new

I broke a spoke on that one last week! I've noticed lots of pot holes appearing in the last few weeks. Thanks for reporting

They are almost all created by buses.

I am not sure where this one is, I think I know, and if I am right it's not a bus creating it. The area around the traffic lights opposite the bus stop near the New River has been plagued by pot holes for ever. It is generally on the Hackney side of the divide (just). I believe there is a spring where the water table is at the surface pushing water out through the road surface that drives the pot hole's initiation, you then get loads of traffic mashing it up and contributing too. I have seen water coming out of holes as I have cycled past in the past.

I would be tempted to claim compensation for the wheel from Hackney council. If you had come off and broken an arm or collarbone then you would have had a claim. I think they may be liable, especially if it has been reported. You might add better a claim for a wheel than something more serious! It has taken them ages to get it fixed in the past...

Yes the OP can go on Fix My Street and see the report there. I think there is more than one report relating to this pot hole.

Thanks Tigha and everyone else who raised this.

I will be asking if someone at the Council is keeping track of pothole reports. Perhaps with maps or databases of locations where dark winter evenings increase the dangers from potholes. Especially with heavy rain and possibly freezing temperatures on the way.

I assume that roads with a constant pounding from heavy vehicles are most at risk. Skimming though HoL's back pages it strikes me that the stretch of Green Lanes from Manor House to Endymion Road is a regular source of resident complaints.

A couple of points to look out for in Green Lanes adjoining the park.

  • In the past it seems that a few street lights were sometimes out. For obvious reasons please report them urgently. Every lamppost should have a unique ID plate.
  • If vegetation from trees on either side of the road seems to obstruct street lighting, then again, please report this. Say if it's tree branches from the park or street trees.
  • Insist when a pothole seems +dangerous+  especially to cyclists or pedestrians.
  • As Nick G-T mentions, rainwater filling a pothole can disguise how deep it is.
  • Both Haringey and Hackney have weekend emergency staff. With what seems to you a genuinely dangerous pothole please tell them.

If you phone and speak to a person please ask for a name and make a note.

If we act together we may help prevent more accidents.

Happy holidays

Deputy Leader of the Council

Cllr, Harringay ward

Have complained about the lighting there many times and nothing gets done. Have given up! Someone will get killed eventually and I will make sure legal action is taken. Completely fed up with it!

Right, I reported this to Hackney council, with precise location, and they told me it was not their problem but Haringey's. So I reported it to Haringey, and, you guessed it, they sent me to Hackney. What to do?

Perhaps our councillors will help?

Er...how long have you got?

Dan77 - Can I suggest you post the email correspondence from Hackney as attachments on this site.

On Green Lanes the Haringey/Hackney boundary is clear. If your emails were also clear about the location — perhaps using street numbers; photos if you took some; streetlight ID; Controlled Parking Zone signs; Google Map — then there is no reason why a report should have been "bounced". Nor if your report was factually accurate, was there any reason for staff from one borough referring you back to the other borough to sort out the problem.

They could have and should have passed this on to their colleagues "across the border". Possibly by  picking-up the phone. Even if the pothole was actually in the stretch of roadway which bridges the New River a phonecall could lead to preventing an accident or even saving a life. Plainly this is more urgent than who pays and who does the work.

The south-north boundary between the boroughs is the New River. The east-west one is the boundary of Finsbury Park. So If it’s on Green Lanes south of the New River it’s Hackney, north is Haringey.

It sounds like a bit of firmness is now called for.

Sure I read a report that in some parts of the Country.

Cyclists have been spray painting Warning Chevrons around pot Holes

Then putting them on Facebook pages. Challenging Authorities to get the Repaired or Sued

Not forgetting in Haringey , they have to issue a order to Contractors to Fix

So a Inspector will have to check adding to delay in getting it repaired

I thought I had updated as that particularly dangerous pothole was filled in when I cycled home Friday evening 21st Dec. Thankfully either hackney or Haringey as it’s right on the border exactly where the lighting is also so bad, at the new river junction

so that’s a good result, although 2 days too late for me
