Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We just got a letter from David Schmitz urging us to vote Lib Dem in the Euro elections in a few weeks. Really irritated by the fact that it has a large graphic proclaiming 'It's a two horse race' and then showing the % vote for the last Council elections.

This is infuratingly misleading - the European elections use a completely different voting system to the ones used for council elections. They use a proportional system (which last time I heard the Lib Dems favoured), so there is no two horse race - you can vote for which ever party you want and it could well make a difference. This is why people are so worried about the BNP possibly getting a London seat.

And they're not the only party. The Labour pamphlet has a photo showing two typical residents 'living' on the ladder. And they do. They just happen to also work for Lammy's office. Cute huh.
Is that you in your the picture on the fiddle Nora ; -)
I won't make any MP fiddling jokes
Hi Nora

Great photographer. :)
The conservative leaflet has a photo of a 'local' resident that is in fact deceased !
On the morning of the last local elections Labour's Tottenham Lane election office put a postcard through my letter box. Each side showed the same photo taken along Duckett Common looking toward WG High Road. Both sides doctored to show (a) a Labour future with a Police Officer and two PCSOs in the foreground; and (b) our Lib Dem future showing three young 'Hoodies'. As some of our best friends wear hoods, the wife and I broke the habit of a lifetime and went down Mattison Road to vote Lib Dem.
Of course I rang the Labour hq and Gina to let them know the effect of their idiocy.
Canvassers of whatever ilk, if you put shit through my front door I'll vote against you. And remember the old adage: 'shit in gold foil wrap shit is still.'
Just had a green leaflet thru my door. On the front is a picture of the candidate with brush and tin of green paint in front of a map of europe with the title 'Lets paint europe green together'.
Does the paint have lead in it ?'
and don't forget you can upload a photo of any of your election leaflets to this website which is monitoring election leaflets "and trying to keep them honest"
excellent, great resource, thanks liz
Last election, a Tottenham Labour party leaflet claimed that Conservatives in Islington had "prevented" the underprivileged from voting. This seemed rather shocking but, when asked about it, a Labour official said well actually, the Conservatives had declined to support a Labour motion to specifically target the underprivileged to get them out to the polls.

I suggested that the Conservatives had not " prevented " but declined to encourage. He agreed but said it was " just semantics ". Since semantics is about the meaning of words and the words used in the pamphlet were misleading, I had to agree.
I find all these leaflets quite entertaining, sort of like amateur dramatics.
Sorry, but I can't really see what the fuss is about.

The letter is a straightforward comment on the forthcoming European elections. As such, it stresses the importance of voting for the only party which understands how vital it is for countries in Europe to work together in order to tackle the critical issues facing our country, such as the problems affecting the global economy and the environment.

The body of the letter contains no comment which might suggest that a vote for any particular party is a wasted vote. Indeed, it says that every vote counts in these elections. Also the PS makes it clear that it is important for people to vote in order to keep out the BNP, a party which fortunately has never figured locally at all, but which unfortunately and notoriously has elected a member to the Greater London Assembly under proportional representation.

Because the Council and Parliamentary elections will shortly be upon us, the letter does contain a reminder that a vote for the Conservatives or for the Greens will not dislodge Labour from its control of the Council. Only we can do that. The reminder of this simple fact is contained in a separate and clearly labelled box.

There is nothing wrong in reminding people that on previous perforamance both in Borough-wide and in Parliamentary elections, we are the only party to provide an alternative to Labour's rule in Haringey.

I have every confidence that voters understand the differences between the European elections on the one hand and the local and Parliamentary elections on the other. I am therefore confident that there will be no confusion between the two.

One final point. The Lib Dems are the only major party to have called for the publication of the report of the European Parliament's auditors on European MPs' expenses. Fortunately, as is clear from today's Sun the issue is at last attracting attention.
