I think if I had made any attempt to get names it would have been me who was very rapidly deleted!

And yes, it has obviously been frustrating to witness friends and colleagues harassed, threatened and terrified in their place of work, seemingly with no recourse to the law. And It was certainly not my intention to suggest that this behaviour was characteristic of an entire community  - that would obviously be ridiculous!

I am however still not clear as to why describing those exhibiting this behaviour as “a subset of the local traveller community well known to the police” is problematic. Might I enquire how a group of 20-30 travellers described by the police as “the usual faces” might be better characterised for the purposes of HoL? Perhaps you would be able to supply a more appropriate collective noun for the group of travellers who smashed up the interior of the Old Ale Emporium? Maybe there is a better way to define the large group who occupied the Salisbury drinking their own alcohol into the early hours of the morning, long after the pub had been forced to shut, and until sufficient numbers of suitably equipped police had been drafted in from across the borough to ensure a violence-free eviction? Perhaps Admin, you could supply a more appropriate characterisation of the travellers who threatened to return to Brouhaha and “smash this bar to pieces” and break the manager’s legs after being asked the leave that works better than “a subset of the local traveller community that are well known to the police.”?

I can only apologise once again if my original post came across as generalisation. This was certainly not my intent and arose from my frustration that the deeply unpleasant actions of a known group (from this or any community) should be above the law. I have certainly witnessed rapid and decisive action being taken for much lesser antisocial behaviour compared with the very limited, and frankly ineffective, response from authorities on these occasions.

What seems to be required here is both better provision for the travelling community across the borough, coupled with a zero tolerance approach from the authorities to any members of this or any other community who break the law so flagrantly with violent, destructive and antisocial behaviour.

As explained in my comment on the previous page, Your original post, which was liberally sprinkled with generalisations about travellers, was only slightly adapted in its second incarnation by changing 'travellers' to 'a subset of travellers'.

This small change along with the neglect to fully adapt the post left much of its apparent original meaning intact.

For example, phrases such as "This is antisocial behaviour appears to be tolerated by police who tend to shift the problem from venue to venue rather than intervening in the way they would if similar behaviour was exhibited by others" were not changed and continued to betray the theme of the original post.

I'm delighted to read of your abhorrence of ascribing behavioural characteristics to a whole minority group. I'm sure you therefore understand why we need to take care that posts on HoL are not perceived in any way as discriminatory.

Now, let's move on!

...and take their children out of local schools, change GPs etc etc. Your campsite jibe is witless. Traveler sites are mostly permanent and to close them makes tenants effectively homeless. In boroughs where sites are provided they are well managed and rents /community charge is paid. There seems to be a simple answer.

Do let me know if anyone gets stuck into you offline for bullying a woman off of the site.

Bit of a weird comment - is that supposed to be a threat? Nobody was bullied - I addressed her comments and she (apparently) chose to take her comments down rather than respond.

I'm not sure what her gender has to do with the price of fish.

No, just wondering as I get told off for it (offline).

...rather it was a reasoned argument that she could not respond to.

Admin deleted Jane Lang's comment on this page since it was criticising travellers in general. Following that deletion, the author has deleted her other posts.

The "agenda", 'Haringey Prohet', is clearly set out in our house rules. We don't allow discriminatory posts. Stick to the rules and your posts won't be deleted. I'll happily delete your account - or you can do so yourself on your settings page.

Apologies. This thread might seem rather disjointed now. After being moderated for adding discriminatory posts that criticised travellers as a group, two of the most vocal contributors have decided for themselves to leave the site.

Whilst it's always sad to see people go, if they can't live with what are pretty run-of-the-mill anti-discriminatory standards, it's perhaps best to part company.

Well done admins. I can't stand the racist guff that occasionally wafts around this site.

Well, since these people seem to have moved on today, this discussion, which was getting very unpleasant, serves no purpose. I'm closing it.
