Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Has anyone else noticed of late that there is a plume of restaurant smoke accumulating over the mid section of Pemberton and Mattison roads. Usually just over South Harringay School? I know that this is a common complaint in the neighbourhood but I have noticed it is far more pronounced, permanent and noxious than ever before, leading me to believe that it may be one of the restaurants in the area possibly lacking the required filtering systems?

It is very concentrated - to the point where one can smell what is being cooked, and tends to 'hover' over said area - one can tell that the air quality changes by going up and down the ladder streets.

I have noticed a cooking smell (usually meat) but at the bottom of Pemberton Road

Hi Alice - thats been my experience also. The fumes seem to originate at the bottom of the road and disperse up all the way to the school. In the evening the street is hazy with smoke. I have already written to the council. Id encourage you to do too. Absolutely unacceptable living conditions.

You are right it is from Devrana and Gokyuzu (primarily- at least as far as I can see). I have been out a few times and walked down the road and see the plumes of smoke from the grill being pumped into the air. As you walk down Pem you can see the extraction unit on Devran billowing away.

The prevailing wind over the UK is south westerly (ie, from the SW). So what happens is the smoke normally blows over the Gardens. I know Gardens residents have a real problem with this, more than I think we do on the Ladder side. However, the wind has shifted (the Beast from the East) is now blowing smoke away from the Gardens on occasions and on the Ladder side of GL. The problem is that as the smoke blows over Pem/Mattison and other middle Ladder rung roads it cannot rise up the hill as there is not sufficient heat in it, so you get a blanket of smoke being pushed into a pocket of air that sits on the middle to lower parts of the road, accumulating.

I am not sure how this can be best dealt with, I am not 100% sure that the restaurants are using filters in their grills- this would take a lot of the smoke and smell out I believe. I am also not sure if they are obliged to or not.

Anyone know?

It would be useful to know if they are supposed to be using filters, and if they are have the council do some inspections to make sure they are in and being used appropriately.

That said, I would also be the first to say I use these places and enjoy their food so there is some price to pay for having facilities like this on our door step- assuming the restaurants are doing their bit too!

That’s interesting as I have noticed a strong smell of cooking the last few days when I cycle up Mattison. Haven’t noticed it more polluted around the school, but then I probably wouldnt

Update. On a busy Sunday I was able to smell and take a video of the smoke billowing from what appears to be Hala. I had a look around and couldn’t see smoke coming out of any of the other restaurants (which appeared no less busy.) Have a look for  yourself.

I think this merits investigation - or perhaps someone else to share their experience so that we can place sufficient pressure on then council/this business. I’m going to write to the council (again) but this just doesn’t seem right especially given the proximity to local schools.

I have seen the same but never actually been able to take a credible image for both Gokuzu and Devran, so this is really useful. I know Andy Newman and the GRA are not happy about this. We occasionally get it blowing up the Ladder rung roads when the wind changes, but the Gardens gets the most of it I am sure.

I am going to send this to David Shipp, not sure of his exact title, but he looks after GL for the council. He may be able to look into this. David.Shipp@haringey.gov.uk

I have messaged you, so please send me your email and I will copy you in.

Hi Justin - thank you for this! I’ll DM you now.

Yep it’s often really bad in H gardens and what with all the concern over wood burning stove pollution I was concerned about the risk to health having so many charcoal grills concentrated in a small area. I think there is another thread on here somewhere but I can’t find it at the moment.

Hi everyone. I have created a Facebook group to take our message as far as possible - https://www.facebook.com/haringaycantbreathe - I have also managed to take a snap of the awful smoky mist that settles on our road on a day like today. Please please please could you share your stories, photos, anecdotes. We can and will make a difference on this issue!

Thanks Kotkas, social media seems to have more of an impact on this kind of anti social behaviour

Justin emailed me and I have been in contact with our Enforcement Manager, Dave Shipp. The points raised in this thread need to be taken very seriously and I will ask for a full briefing on the implications, the regulatory framework and how this can be mitigated.

Zena Brabazon

Cllr Harringay ward.

Thank you Zena. Feel free to get in touch if you have any further questions on the matter.
