I have been aware of the mindless dog damage to trees (I assume this is from dogs) on the main tree lined road from manor house gate to Finsbury park but only this week (since Wireless fences have gone up and the route around the park is limited) have I noticed that there is similar damage to nearly every tree along the Seven Sister's Road fence.
Some of these trees will die and the problem is clearly increasing.
I wonder what's the solution is?
Wrought iron baskets around the tree bases as they do in town to protect the trees?
I wonder if anyone has a foolproof solution or knows how to go about sorting this out. We have a great park and it would be such a shame to lose any more of the trees than we have already.

Presumably it won't run to having a park keeper?
Next time you're passing the park, if you have a camera on your phone, I'd be interested to see some pictures.

I will get some tomorrow and follow up with pics of those that can't be seen until Wireless has finished

it appears to be dog damage but without actually seeing it happen, it is hard to be certain.
Some of the other trees down the main carriage way are definitely dog damage as I've seen it happen.
I've also noticed damage to the silver birch trees near the Oxford Road gate - some of it is definitely done by a human as it is intentional ringing of the bark (ie going round the circumference of the tree), which will sadly kill the trees. The ones most affected along the carriageway from Manor House to Finsbury Park are the ones nearest to a bench, so maybe these at least could have iron baskets. I mentioned the problem to one of the park workers a few weeks ago and he was aware of the problem, and said they needed to catch the culprit(s) before they could do anything about it. Maybe some of the money the council is getting from the concerts could go towards iron baskets to protect our trees ....
This is terrible Carrie!
Haringey Tree Wardens are ordinary residents who care for trees. We can't protect every tree from harm (stuff happens), but we might be able to remind the Council how this has been dealt with elsewhere, and keep an eye on specific local trees if they're under threat.
We work with the Council putting on events etc so have good contacts with people behind the scenes. Local Councillors can also help, although I know that the Tree Dept are usually quick to react to this sort of thing - they've seen it a few times before over the years, sadly.
If the Council don't put up metal tree guards or do something about it and you want any support from us, we're behind anything that protects trees and ready to help.
I think cages would be the only sensible solution really
Agree - I call them metal tree guards but they are cages. The Council remove the guards in batches after the first three years or so.
The latest ones have a small opening at the bottom (at the suggestion by a Tree Warden) so we can easily remove the non-tree things that can collect there.
