If what you have is an old standard lamp (the kind that stand on the floor, with a base, a column of about 5-6 feet, and carrying a big shade) then they are usually quite straightforward to rewire. You would probably need to not only rewire it, but also put in a new fitting for the bulb-holder, and a new mains plug. I've rewired loads of our own lamps (including ones we brought from the US, which required all of the above, as US mains voltage is only half of the UK, 115v rather than 240v). Happy to offer advice/assistance if you like. You shouldn't need to pay an electrician for something so straightforward
