A retired special needs teacher is to have her cardboard sculptures displayed in an Islington gallery.
Josette Carroll, 70, only took up sculpting two years ago, but next month her work will be on show at Candid Arts Galleries in Angel as part of the Islington Contemporary Art and Design Fair.
Ms Carroll lived in Highgate Woods for more than 12 years during which time she was a special needs teacher at Greenfields School in Coppetts Road, Muswell Hill, and Stationers’ Company’s School in Mayfield Road, Hornsey.
However, following her retirement, she undertook a degree in fine arts at Lincoln University and, two years ago, took up sculpting.
Her works are all created from discarded corrugated cardboard packaging which she often salvages from street markets.
Ms Carroll said: “I discovered my attraction for 3D work when I was completing a degree course in 2010.
“My work encompasses a diverse range of processes and styles, using discarded cardboard packaging to explore form, space and texture.”
She added: “I have always been artistic but I only took up sculpting properly since I retired.
“I loved the degree course I took and I love textures. I noticed the potential of cardboard as I love the surprise of the textures when you cut into it.”
Ms Carroll now lives with her husband in Rutlandshire but she will be coming down to London for the exhibition which will take place from 11am until 6pm on October 6 and 7.
She said: “I am really looking forward to it. My husband and I still have lots of friends in London so it will be like a big reunion.
“I am sure it will be a good opportunity to display my work and I hope people will enjoy it.”
