Just been emailed that all future Area Assemblies cancelled (due to budget cuts) until further notice thus restricting residents access to local democracy.

Presumably that's just the March and, possibly, the June round of AAs that are cancelled, pending the proposals for 'Area Committees alongside AAs' ?

Whether the cancellation of AAs really restricts 'residents' access to local democracy' is an enigma wrapped in a riddle enclosed in a mystery secreted within a conundrum interred among tree roots in one or other of the Borough's parks or lost in the foundations of River Park House, or somewhere.

The Council is also completing plans to implement the Governance review agreed by the last Full Council. Under these proposals it is proposed to establish Area Committees to work alongside Area Assemblies. These plans will be finalised prior to the Council’s Annual General Meeting in May with a view to the first cycle of meetings taking place later this year.
Hooray! A fig leaf up in smoke.

Yes, the Centre for Social Justice did some work for the Council early last year and made some recommendations. Not sure what the recommendations said, other than it looks likearea committees are one of the outcomes.

I agree. I went to one of the first Area Assemblies (Northumberland Park and White Hart Lane). It was billed as, "You Talk, We Listen" - nothing could have been further from the truth.

Can I suggest that people in the various wards join together and hold a bi-monthly meeting (maybe in a school hall), where councillors and officials are invited to attend and answer questions? The chair could be elected by local residents themslves (with no pay). If councillors refused to turn up then you would be able to kick them out when they offer themselves for re-election.
