Britain's filthy streets
Published today, the latest Local Environment Quality Survey shows that streets around the country are still in an unsatisfactory condition.
Headline findings from the 2007-08 survey include:
*Smoking related litter remains by far the most prevalent item of litter on England's streets, found on 78 per cent of all sites surveyed.
*Confectionary packaging is again the second most common item. This year it fell slightly from 67 per cent to 64 per cent.
*Drinks related litter has risen: alcoholic drinks up by one per cent to 22 per cent, soft drinks litter up by five per cent to 57 per cent.
*Fast food, which has risen nearly every year since the survey began seven years ago, has risen again - this time by one per cent. Fast food was present on 25 per cent of sites surveyed.
*Dog fouling has fallen for the second successive year. It was evident on six per cent of sites surveyed. Dog fouling has now fallen by one per cent in each of the last two years
Overall litter has fallen by three per cent on last year.
This annual report surveys 19,000 sites across England looking at environmental problems like litter, fly-posting and graffiti.
It aims to give an objective and independent analysis of the cleanliness of our streets and neighbourhoods and identify key trends.
3%? Pitiful.
Are local authorities and government taking on board recommendations like these?

Many thanks to Liz, for the link to this Survey. I was disappointed not to see specific Haringey data so I emailed ENCAMS who sent me their detailed Haringey report. This shows the borough in 2007-08 in comparison with National Standards. This report is a 103 page document. Please ask me if you'd like a copy emailed: alan.stanton@virgin.net - bearing in mind that it's over two megabytes.
Overall, the report suggests some significant improvements in Haringey on several indicators. Though there are some unsatisfactory ones including: litter; staining; dog faeces; and "waste left out" (which I assume means dumping).
It's unclear to me how far averaging the scores for data collected across the borough may obscure problems in particular neighbourhoods or areas. So while it's heartening when figures are heading in the right direction, that doesn't make someone feel better about rubbish or dogshit in their street.

I think 'waste left out' might also include stuff like this...... for some reason I can't upload pics at work.
If anyone sees a white transit van with a 'tipping back' dumping building waste around Colina Mews/Colina Road in N15 please try and get a registration plate as he is dumping this amount of rubbish once a month. Fourth time this year in fact. Apparently the council can't follow him on CCTV depsite me having times of dumping and he'd have to turn into Green Lanes - this was 9.18pm March 22 - because the cameras point at the footpaths not the roads.

Unflippingbelievable!!! Could you press for CCTV to be installed there to try and catch him? Or do you think he would just find a way of avoiding the camera?

I am trying to get the council to get CCTV down there or some kind of operation. I have got photos of his other dumping but he's too fast to catch a number plate as doesn't stop the van as he dumps. Council to be fair have been good so far but think they realise this will only be sorted out by spending council money on it. Am just hoping they will as its a real problem as you can see.
