Mosquitoes in Jan/Feb. Should I be worried?
In the past three weeks I've killed about 15 mosquitoes in our house, I seem to find a couple a day. (Killed 2 this morning in the bathroom). I'm on Glenwood Road. They seem to be large but very slow - hence my kill success rate.
Never had this before at this time of year. Should I be worried?

They hibernate when it gets cold, but we've had mild (>10 deg. C) days which can wake them up.
Size - are they 10-12 mm long? When you say large, you don't mean the 30 mm long crane flies (harmless, no bite)?

Thanks Gordon. When I say long I mean they're adult size, they're definitely mosquitoes. Tried to call the council for advice but got lost in the phone system. I was just worried we might have standing water or some kind of breeding area but perhaps I don't need to worry as there's only been a few?

Nuisance value but no other issue unless you're superallergic to bites I guess. There are no reports of people catching diseases from them in this country even though there are Anopheles mosquitoes here. Mind you, malaria was considered present on the marshes in north Kent ('the ague', Great Expectations territory, Magwitch and all that) as late as the 1950s....

How odd! As Gordon said, the mild weather isn't helping. Check for stagnant water in garden pond or bucket/water butt etc near house as they breed like....flies?

Yes, standing water in bucket / puddle somewhere near the house? I had this problem in the summer. Looked it up on line, and you can get rid of any larvae you spot in the water by covering the surface with a film of ordinary cooking oil - it shuts off oxygen.

And, here we are being green with our rainwater butts (with anti-evaporation lids) - what's lurking underneath?

I looked around the garden and found some standing water but nothing looked like it had any activity in it. Found 5 more this am in the bathroom and two this evening. Urg.... maybe need to investigate under the floorboards. All very strange. Anyway thanks for all your replies.
