Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
This week's top three shopping treats on Harringay's High Street
When Richard Godwin, local resident and Standard journalist, tweeted,
"You wouldn't believe it but this is *the* best Italian deli in London" and accompanied it with a picture of this shop,
I have to admit, I raised a quizzical eyebrow.
He was, however, absolutely right for at the back, past the fags and mags, is a fridge full of treats: pecorino, fresh pasta, mozzarella...
Couple that with their small but perfectly formed selection of craft beers and All Star Food and Wine captures third place in my top places to shop this week.
Speaking of beer, the selection in Harringay Local Store continues to dazzle, add to this a fridge full of delicious salads and meat and shelves groaning with organic goodies and it's hard not to spend lots of cash here and walk out with a shopping bag full of good stuff. So, HLS motors into second place in my top three this week.
So, what could possibly be in first place?
Well, with a week like we're having, we're all in need of desserts and the place to indulge your sweet tooth is Poziomka on Grand Parade whose fresh apple cake (apologies for not being able to reproduce its Polish name despite being told twice! Answers in the comments please) was the business. As I lurked at the counter, literally unable to choose since everything looked amazing, I have the lady taking the money to thank for recommending it. With a huge slice of cake, some frozen pierogi and the inevitable bag of paprika crisps in my bag, it was clear that FIRST place this week belongs to Poziomka.
Just behind in fourth place, by the way, was Sika, for cheap Sapporo beer (my favourite beer from overseas), fun stuff like pretty chopsticks and sandalwood Japanese incense, and last, but absolutely not least, the scrummiest green tea ice cream this side of Kyoto.
Oh lawd, now I'm hungry...

Thanks for this Liz. Apparently poziomka is Polish for wild strawberry - hence the logo!
I wish there were more decent food shops at the far northern end of the Ladder. I have noticed that Rainbow occasionally stocks organic sourdough bread and a few Suma products so maybe there's hope! (no wonder I end up at Tesco when I can't even find certain basics in 4 different shops)

I have been several times to Grenier and love it! Very reasonably price, nice selection of both sweet and savoury stuff and the staff are friendly and professional. I didn't know it was a Spanish chain: out of curiosity, where are the other branches?

Great post!
Hubby is italian and we get our italian staples from All Star. It took a while to find it. Its Opp Paul Simons. Great lil shop. Albeit the exterior is dubious.
Sika is one i didnt know about. Been looking for Green Tea ice cream since i had it in hong Kong. So thanks for the update.

Thank you Liz for the All Star Italian deli alert. I've now been a couple of times. Best Italian deli in London it sure ain't but nevertheless immensely useful - from my point of view mainly for industrial quantities of fresh sausage and mozzarella and very low prices. The guys working there didn't seem to be Italian (speaking something in the Turkish/Iranian spectrum) which might perhaps explain the slightly odd selection. I had hoped to be able to buy a large bulk piece of pancetta for cutting up and freezing but they just looked at me blankly and pointed at the nasty little packets of ready chopped pancetta.
I like Poziomka but prefer the Polish shop called Zloty in Wood Green, on the east side of the high road just north of Shopping City.

The owners are Kurdish, but regardless they've got a good selection of Italian produce and some Spanish stuff as well (cheese etc). Strange they don't make more of it from the shop window.
