Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

World leaders need to do more to stop the appalling and horrific violence in Gaza. Our Government has done enough dithering and stalling on the subject. Please sign a petition to voice your opinion by visiting this link: https://www.savethechildren.org.uk/ and make your voice heard.

Thanks Chris

I have forwarded it onto a few forums.
But what does the petition say, exactly ? All I can see is sign here but no details.
If you can’t or don’t like attending demonstrations and or vigils but still want to do something practical and useful to help the Palestinians in Gaza read the article by Naomi Klein in the Gaurdian
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/jan/10/naomi-klein-boy...
This article calls for renewed support for the Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel’s disgraceful and unacceptable behaviour towards the Palestinians in Gaza.

If you’re not sure try reading John Pilger’s article in the Morning Star http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/news/features/disgrace_of_the_si...
Or those by Geoff Simmons, Ken Livingston, etc., which can be found by browsing the web site.

You can read about the campaign and also see the letter ‘Jewish call for BDS’ at http://www.bigcampaign.org/ You can find a comprehensive guide to products to boycott under the Boycott Campaigns/Consumer Boycott. http://www.bigcampaign.org/index.php?page=boycott_israeli_goods

Of course you can also donate to the charities raising money for humanitarian aid, but since the Gaza is blockaded and only small quantities of relief are let in – and even then the truck drivers get shot at – it’s not the most practical way of helping at the moment.
All the Palestinians/Hamas have to do is stop firing rockets into Israel. As far back as I can remember - 1967 Golan Heights ? - it has always been the Palestinians who have attacked Israel.

And re Chris Smith's denunciation of our government's "dithering and stalling ", was it not the British delegation who drafted and pushed through the UN Resolution calling for a cease fire ?
Probably 1967 is not enough to understand things, what happened during the WW I and what the British did could explain more: British mandate of Palestine.
It sounds like somebody promised something to the local arabs in order to get support and defeat the Ottomans. And later they promised the same thing to the Jews?
Maybe playing too much politics wasn't a such good idea?
All the Israelis have to do is to stop strangling Palestine and to lift all the sanctions it has over the “country”. If you offer them a glimmer of hope instead of blockading everything and give them the right to survive with some degree of quality you would be heading in the right direction.

Two wrongs don’t make a right but as a so-called civilised nation, they could offer more realistic options of humanity to the Palestinians. They have to live next to each other and they both need to recognise each other, both are not doing that.

Blanket bombing is playing into the hands of Hamas and will create more martyrs.

The Palestinians need to be part of the ceasefire and peace process, ignoring them isn’t an option.

This aggression on both sides will achieve didly squat.

Reuters
"The United States, Britain and France have dropped objections to a binding U.N. resolution on the Gaza crisis and are working on one that calls for an "immediate cease-fire," diplomats said on Thursday."

They did push through a UN resolution eventually. But Gordon Brown refused to condemn Israeli airstrikes before a call for a truce was made. This is the dithering I was referring to.
Granted Hamas have caused Israel to defend itself but the Israelis have always been heavy-handed in their response. Do they really think they can bomb terrorists into submission? I keep hearing about 'targeted bombing' of Hamas by the Israelis while watching TV news footage of cluster bombs falling on Gaza!
And yes, Hamas need to stop bombing Israel. Perhaps the Nations who divided these people in the first place have a responsibility to educate and mediate.
That would be the League of Nations / United Nations ?

I still don't know what the petition you urge us to sign actually says.
All it says on the website is that we're asking for a lasting ceasefire. I don't know about you but that's all I need to know. How they go about it is anybodys guess but then that's up to the powers that be to enter into talks with those concerned.
Everybody wants a lasting ceasefire. It's the conditions that interest me.

Suppose it said I hereby pledge £1000 in support of the cause. ?
Save the Children have used this to kill three birds with one stone

i) to collect signatures opposing the bombardment of Palestinian civilians
ii) to collect vital information for their mailshots
iii) to put a "donate" button visable, you cannot blame them.

A good cause non the less,. Another one in my inbox this morning, maybe this is a little more to the point:

Number 10, E-petition.

Please sign below top demand the British government to: punish Israel for its failure to adhere to the Geneva Convention concerning the collective punishment of the citizens of Gaza. Israeli tactics are cruel, malicious and demonstrate that Israel is not interested in the peace process or a Palestinian State. They are creating the ideal breeding ground for extremism, sabotaging peace efforts and squandering the good will they have been given.

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Israel-Sanctions/

Also, Israel is using illegal weapons in a densely populated area. Including white phosphorus shells; the weapon, used by British and US forces in Iraq, can cause horrific burns. The Geneva Treaty of 1980 stipulates that white phosphorus should not be used as a weapon of war in civilian areas.
The list of violations undertaken by Israel is very long.
So, please circulate the petition widely. Thank you.
