Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I am sure that Harringay Online members will join me in congratulating South Harringay Infant and Nursery school on a fantastic Ofsted report:

"South Harringay Infant and Nursery School provides an outstanding education. Children make a very positive start to their schooling and teachers ensure that no one falls behind. The school is a beacon of good work and makes a substantial contribution to the cohesiveness of the local community."

Although I didn't want this thread to turn into a discussion about local schools in general, I am passing on a message from one of the governors of the Junior school regarding comments made about their Ofsted report,

"SHJS had an Ofsted in October of last year and was deemed to be 'good with outstanding features' which is a terrific result given the previous Ofsted four years before. This followed the excellent SATs resuslts of 2008 and 2007 when the school received a letter of commendation from the then Schools Minister, Lord Adonis. The life chances of children on the Ladder are pretty damn good now, thanks to the terrific work done by the teachers and TA's. Our community should do all we can to support them."

Nuff said, I think...let's leave it at that with regards the Junior school.
It is most gratifying to learn that South Harringay school still performs so well. I went to that school in 1928, when I was five years old, and left it in 1933, when my family moved to Surrey. There, for one year I had so-called 'schooling' at a local primary, where I learned absolutely nothing (save perhaps how to swear!). Then, aged 11, I sat for a scholarship place at a grammar school, and sailed through both the written and the oral examinations, thanks entirely to my five years at South Harringay. At 86 this year, I still have fond memories of my very first school 'twixt Pemberton and Mattison Roads!

Go Arthur!

That's some accolade.

This whole 'choosing the right school' lark is hard work. I live nearer to NH school, but chose SH through gut instinct and being shown around by a very open and honest head teacher.
The staff at SHIS work cohesively amongst themselves and with parents which has helped achieve this most deserved Ofsted Report.

'We' have recently moved up to SHJS and I have to say there are some major differences: my heart is still in it, but my head is having some trouble. One thing I am certain is that going to both SH Infants and Juniors will teach my child how to respect everyone and not to be judgmental which is more than I can say for some of the grown ups posting comments on here.

Academics can be taught all our lives, but a harmonious community is a priceless: let's be proud of our achievements.

How kind of you to respond to my short piece on South Harringay School. I wonder if you have seen the two photos I posted on HoL? One of the class of 1928, and the other of the cast of the school play in 1930/31. Each time I look at them I can smell the chalk, and the 1/3 pint bottles of milk which, in the winter, stood in a crate alongside the tortoise stove in the classroom. But that milk often sustained me when I walked home along Wightman Road in the pea-souper fogs of the 1920/30s! Please tell your son/daughter to cherish the years at South Harringay. I'm sure they'll provide a sound foundation.
With best wishes,

NHP last had an Oftsted report in October 2006 and will probably therefore have another one later this year.

Not that I think Ofsted reports are the be all and end all tbh
