Haringey Open Consultation on Business Rates Relief
Haringey Council has announced proposals to remove barriers to new businesses launching in Haringey.
In a move aimed at attracting investment, creating new jobs for local people and supporting the local economy, consultation opened on Thursday provide a new discretionary business rates relief policy.
If the plans go ahead, Haringey will become one of the first boroughs in London to introduce a relief scheme.
Some of the new proposals include:
- Introducing a three-year 30 percent relief scheme for new and converted work spaces, to encourage more start-up and creative industry and boost employment in Haringey.
- Offering business rates relief to organisations hoping to run temporary activities, such as pop-up markets and retail units, at regeneration sites
- Updating the existing policy on discounts to voluntary, charity and community groups to ensure it is fair and supports those that most benefit local communities.
The consultation runs until January 28, 2016.

How will this help existing businesses that are looking to close? For example Cafe Lemon.

A possible benefit could be that more small businesses open, generating more money in the local economy through purchasing goods and services and paying wages. In theory that would mean more spending. Whether or not that spending happens locally, and benefits existing local business, is out of Haringey's control and isn't a short term fix. So it could be of benefit to places like Cafe Lemon - or not - it's a toss of a coin really.

It helps competition. Whatever helps competition is good for the people, as prices are driven down.
I also helps the small guy, who wouldn't be able to set up business otherwise.
