Advice on people dumping rubbish in bins

Hi All,

I need some advice. We've got a problem at the moment with people using our bins, I have checked with neighbours and they have all said it isn't them.  People have dumped a load of old clothes in our recycling bins, filling it up, I'm concered that they bin/recycling men will refuse to take it and I don't want to be rooting about with other peoples soiled clothes, do you think the council would help and anyone got any advice on stopping this happening?

We share them with our downstairs neighbours so we can't put them in the back garden and the front is very slopped so we can't move the bins up nearer the house.

Council will do nothing and yes the bin men won't take the bin if it's non recycling things are in there. Maybe put a detternet note on the bins telling people to stop dumping on them!

Thanks Emma, It's really annoying as if they had put it in the black bins it wouldn't be so bad! :(

I know! Really annoying! Probably passer bys...or if it is neighbours now you have said something it may stop.

My friend had same prob as you in Willesden Green - they put on padlock in end, as Osbawn suggested, and end of prob!

Some people cannot or will not read notes unfortunately and you will never know who the culprit/s are. So, sorry for your selfish/lazy neighbours but get locking dear Mickey

I have the same problem. All sorts of people using my bin. One, my upstairs neighbour, her excuse was that her bin was full and there was plenty of room in mine! Where should I put mine then? Passersby make a detour into my front yard to use MY bin, not any of the neighbours bins that are by the wall and easily accessible from the pavement. Then next door started because the binmen wouldn't take their bins, (over filled, wrong rubbish etc). Veolia said it wasn't their problem but I think it was. It was because of THEIR rules that this was happening to me. What were the neighbours supposed to do to get their bins emptied?

Now I just spy on my own bin via CCTV and challenge anyone using my bin. If I know who's done it I give them back their rubbish and for persistent offenders, their rubbish gets closer and closer to their door. It is having and effect.

There is a purpose made lock that you can buy but it's a bit dear. If you go the route of your own padlock and clasp be aware of the way the bin is emptied so as to not cause any problems there.

PS. I haven't seen the bin divers lately?
