Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I do think my dentist in Park Road, Crouch End is cheekily pennypinching; there is now a £1 fee if you pay by card dentists' charges are already high and few people carry that much cash with them these days.

Even debit cards, sally? Credit card companies get a slice off the top, I thought debit cards were different.

yes, Gordon, I was using a debit card

I'm behind the times, sorry: a search of "debit card transaction charge" tells me that debit card charges used to be a small flat fee of 12-14 pence which the retailer would waive. Earlier this year they changed, for Visa cards at least, to a 0.2% charge, so a fair (or unfair) size dental bill will have a higher retailer charge much closer to a pound which the (retailer) dentist is choosing to pass on, in round terms, to you.

Credit card charges are around ten times higher, and I know one shop that has had for many years two sets of prices depending on which type of card is used.

Not a dentist, but I was at a salon a couple of weeks ago. The woman ahead of me was paying by card. The salon owner charged her a £1 fee and insisted that the fee be paid in cash. The woman had to rummage in her handbag for change. Fortunately for her, she was there to get a haircut. I got a manicure, which would have been completely ruined if I had to do the same.
