Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I think Harringay is doing a great job online. I'm the Chief Admin Officer of the Town of Berwick, a small town (pop 2500) in Nova Scotia, Canada. Kudos to the web developer(s) and to your local Council for supporting your gov2.0 endeavours!

I guess I'm here to watch, listen, learn. Local egov in the UK is many strides ahead of we Canucks. Best of luck with this commendable initiative!

Oh yeah, how locals pronounce Harringay?

The local council do not support us.... Hugh may have some special way of telling you how to pronounce it but it's pretty much as it's spelt.
I think it will. Two weeks ago I was invited to spend a day in the Department of Communities & Local with a group of Heads of Communication of Councils from around the UK. As part of the day I made a presentation about Harringay Online and led a discussion about what we're doing here. A vote at the end of the day placed our approach as the one most likely to succeed in connecting with local communities.
Yup - lessons gleefully given and no 1st class travel claims!
yes, up until now we have had little interest from the council (although a number of local councillors and the office of the local MP as well as the local police are all members.) We are acquiring new members daily and looking to get the 'harder to reach' (as they say) residents involved too.
This site couldn't be more grassroots, it was set up by the founder, Hugh and maintained by him although we are looking at ways to secure funding just to pay a few basic bills and do a little development. It is sustained by regs such as John who also puts his hand in his pocket most generously and supported by local people.
However, a bid for funding to the council was turned down flat.
The admin is done by Hugh and myself as a volunteer. Thanks for your kind wishes and hope you can get something going...2500 people sounds about right for a successful hyperlocal network.
As to pronunciation, just say what you see!
I tweet from time to time in the Twitterverse too, Bob :)
Pronounced as it's spelt Bashley, depending on your accent : )
Ha-rrin-gay, but faster.
Stress on the first syllable.
Though many years ago when a large government cheque to the local (Haringey) Council went missing, it was traced to an account in Vienna. Which led to jokes about the Austrian police hunting an Englishman named Herr Ingey.
A born and bred cockney local would probably drop the H........
Arringay......lol
Cockneys are East Enders, the North Londoners wouldn't associate themselves with them Cockney types : )
