Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I need to get a photocopy of my passport certified as true, and the possible certifiers include:

a judge

a magistrate

a justice of the peace

a registrar or deputy registrar at a court

a notary public

a police officer

Does anyone have any experience of approaching one of the above to get documents certified, or could you suggest how I could find a justice of the peace for example? Presumably I can't just approach a traffic policeman on the street to do this, though perhaps it's worth a try??

Can you please post a photo of the conditions for verifying the copy (i.e., the list of accepted certifiers)?

Hi Harringay Birder, it's essentially the list above, plus a few Australia-specific posts including Australian consular official, Australia post office employee, Australian chartered accountant etc. It looks like consular official will be the most straightforward though not the cheapest.

You  should be able to walk into any High Street solicitors and get it done for £5.00. Takes two minutes.

Is this for Australia?  if so you can do it at the High Commission (though it ain't cheap).

We tried the "friendly police officer" route with no luck - they were unwilling/unable to do this.

Thanks David - yes it is for Australia. £11 isn't too bad compared to a notary public fee, and good to know you don't need an appointment.

I got mine certified at the post office for £7.50. A UK post office won't suffice?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Whilst a solicitor wasn't on the list, I did check with the people who need the certification and they said a solicitor's certification would be fine. However, in the end I just went to the consulate as I could walk in without an appointment.
