Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

From the Haringey Independent

World Mental Health Day got underway in Haringey last Friday with a protest against the "drug-focused" culture in the treatment of mental illness.

The campaigners wheeled a hospital bed from St Ann’s Hospital, Tottenham, to Parliament Hill, Camden, to lobby the NHS to consider more alternative treatments to prescribing medicine.

The Crazy Bed Pushers, as they called themselves, say talking therapies and creative activities can be equally effective.

As a health professional myself I know that good practice highlightes the need to not just focus on meds but also on talking therapies, but like lots of nhs there are so few resourses for it. But there is also a really important role for people to take meds if they have mental illness unless mild, but definetly a combination of the two is often the way forward, but mental health has had to cope with more cut backs than anywhere else-there should be more protests asking for more therapists to be employed as thats the problem with often a 6month waiting list for just 6 sessions-can you imagine feeling desparate and being told you have to wait 6months for proper help=no wonder doctors rely on meds which can start working within 2 weeks
